  1. I’m doing my BFR on Saturday in C172. Last time I flew a tricycle was 2 years earlier for same deal I think it’s good to get out of my comfort zone (Auster) and really try myself out. Have also done it in. C182R for same reason.
  2. If you have OzRunways look at the 250 topo map and you will find airstrips all over the place. Remember they are private or on Crown Land and PPR is required in most cases but great to know in the event of an in-flight emergency.

  4. My view is that the maintenance of the airframe is even more important than the maintenance of the engine. Despite popular opinion, aeroplanes generally do not stop flying unbidden if the engine stops. Losing wings and control surfaces is generally terminal.

Years ago I was sitting in the outdoor bar area at William Creek having a quiet health drink and fell into conversation with a guy about my age (crikey...must have been more than a few years ago) who was deeply tanned and covered in the red dirt of the country, and also taking healthy refreshment. We talked about aeroplanes and flying and experiences Outback. He told me about an old squatter he knew who had a Bonanza which he used to collect the station stores from the Alice but hadn’t flown east in 30 years. He decided to go to Brisbane and see the sights. As he approached Archerfield, he called them up: Archerfield... tower.... Bonanza.... XYZ ....2000... inbound.   9. Nick Caldwell at Tyabb has a Sopwith Pup which he built from scratch using original drawings. Turned all his own brass fittings and all. And on it goes.
  11. Another spot where there is still ample runway (for an Auster) but the powers that be might frown if used is at Laverton, Vic adjacent the museum. And your comments about eyesight reminded me of my “test” for my Master V with Captain Mesquite at the Marine Board. I have poor vision in my right eye but 20:20 in my left. I forgot my glasses but persevered.... Red....yes Green...yes White ...yes Read the alphabet...left eye good Right eye... Capn: “This is no good...you fail...you are blind in one eye! Me: “No room in your navy for Nelson then! Capn: Who is this Nelson? I got my ticket. And what’s this about 68.5 you whippersnapper? I’m 75.5 and I’ve passed my latest Aeromedical, too.
  12. And if you go to Singapore, do NOT step over the red line until permission is granted...they still mete out capital punishment at Changi! Strewth!! I think I need to wear my Pensioners’ Association badge more conspicuously.

My particular gripe is the student commercial pilots from down the road who give incredibly long position reports with intentions as they fly overhead at 5000+ totally over-transmitting aircraft in the circuit. I also have a sneaking suspicion their radio calls are written out for them prior to departure because a question directed to them invariably receives no answer or a confused “errrh”.

Take hay off...ding Take watch off...thank goodness...thought the pants and bra were next. I go through court security most days...never a problem.
  15. The easiest way to prepare a plan is to do it on the chart. Find the airport of departure on the chart and tap on it (if it has a little camera symbol tap near it) and select your airport as “origin” from the drop down box. Find your next intended landing point and do the same...etc.

  19. Have just paid our PII of some $20k and would have to disagree that there is no redress for incompetent lawyering. We are very much held to account by Legal Services Board and profession specific laws with severe penalties for mistakes. Insane persons are not set free at the behest of judges. Forensicare is full of insane murderers who will remain there for life. Kaz
  20. SHEPPARTON Council has introduced landing fees of $11.00 per ton pro rata with a minimum $11.00 fee and I fear the Avdata virus is spreading rapidly across Victoria. The GV Aero Club has managed to negotiate an annual fee of $190 including GST paid direct to Council by local aircraft and Aeroclub members? Club membership is $100 pa. On the positive side, Council has cancelled the former “infrastructure” fees paid by locals. Short term parking remains free. A C172 Skyhawk has a MTOW of 1113 kg so a fee of $13.25 would be payable. The Annual Fee would be recouped after 15 landings for the year. A Bonanza would recoup costs even more quickly.
