I stopped there last year on my way to the Birdsville Races. Friendly staff who couldn’t do enough for you. The only hassle as no Telstra service, had to buy an Optus SIM card.

Hi Geoff RV7, when you say you are just stretching your wings do you mean your instructor is about to put you through some cross country training or have you already completed all of your training? i have an RV7A and it is a great cross country aircraft. Plenty of speed, plenty of range & a pleasure to fly. cheers

Welcome Rob, I found that it was either a time or money thing. You either had the time & not the money, or you had the money & not the time. I hope it works for you as it is a great adventure & feeling of freedom ?

Hi L & D & welcome to the forum which I am sure you will enjoy. Looks like you have been around aviation for a while and I bet have seem some changes and not just the cost of flying. You mentioned you would like “Australia to really step up to the table and embrace aviation“ we always hear about problems in every day life but not enough solutions. Hi Bruce, I did Lake Eyre last year on my way to the Birdsville Races. It was dry then so no comparison to what it would look like know. We stayed a William Creek which is a great one stop shop, fuel food and accommodation. The staff were all great and were very helpful. It is a good bitumen strip with a dirt cross strip that does not show in ERSA as it does meet standards. But I telephoned ahead to check strip condition/fuel availability and winds and were given a very accurate report. The only downside to that part of the world is communication, unless you have Optus as that is the only coverage there apart from sat. Phones. Wrightsair will happily assist you but I preferred to download NAIPS myself so I had to buy a SIM card with Optus. Not expensive I think it was only $10 and I was up and communicating again. Hope this is of some help let me know if I can provide anything else to assist. Cheers

I think that all of the posts have been valuable with providing explanations for each comment. The only point that I would like to add is that most of these conversations have been based on each aircraft having and correctly using a radio. Whilst the radio is a great tool it is not compulsory at all airports in Australia, don’t rely on radio calls alone, see and avoid is the best tool that you can have. If you are not comfortable with what is happening at the time make adjustments to your flight so that you are comfortable. Better to arrive late than “dead on time” Use time on the ground when you can’t be in the air to think about these scenarios so if you ever need it you have already thought about it. Cheers -
This topic raises a few questions was it referring to airframe icing? was it referring to carby icing? here is the definition I found which provided the answer “ moisture “ Icing conditions exist when the air contains droplets of supercooled liquid water; icing conditions are characterized quantitatively by the average droplet size, the liquid water content and the air temperature Cheers

Thanks Turbo I didn’t look at it like that but now that you have pointed it out speculation is a great asset to have in your tool kit. My speculation is to make sure that facts are what you make decisions on and scenarios are what you use as a decision making tool for what you would do if you are faced with a similar situation. ATSB ? really I thought that is what the forum was sorry. Whatever

RIP It would be a good idea to leave any speculation to the gossipers and not bring it into this forum. Another sad day for aviation not to mention friends, family and the people who have to attend these tragic incidents.

That’s correct, but remember you can commence a flight and the area is not active so it will not show red until it becomes active. I fly out of an area which is close to a restricted military zone which is active mostly Monday - Friday. You must monitor the area you are flying to and through for the entire journey. The best way I have found to do that is being familiar with the NOTAM for that area when it is active so you can be prepared for when it does become active and you are flying. Do a few dummy plans on days that you are not flying so you can review the NOTAM for areas you may wish to fly through in the future. There sure is plenty of days that we can’t fly due to weather which gives us time to do some research. The NOTAM will have contact details for you that you can use en-route both telephone & radio channel. You don’t need a telephone to enter those areas but you must have a radio. I have always found transiting the area has been met with curtesy. I always am mindful that it is a privilege not a right and have had no issues. I would not like to test the waters of busting their airspace so I continue to monitor for the duration of the flight. cheers -

The fact that we are all here and posting on this subject means that whatever method we are or have been using is working well for us individually so keep the good work up. It would be a very boring place if we all did the same thing. Ozrunways works great for me and I too have flown over many remote areas within Australia. Do I trust it 100% I would like to say yes but reality is I have it on more than 1 device and also have an installed GPS and a small portable GPS.This works for me and I am happy to continue with this option. I will be doing a flight in June which will take me across the centre of Oz and up to Longreach and back to Perth so I will let you know if I find any issues with my chosen navigation aides. Cheers
