  1. Well for 90% of the RAA fleet it is probably a fairly accurate comment, I know on mine if I get an engine out it would have to be a seriously thermally day to keep up there for too long. I work on a rough figure of 10:1, I am not sure of what the 'average' glide ratio of recreational aircraft is but I would be surprised if it was above 15:1 so I would say for the majority of us that the engine is the main thing that is 'keeping' us up there.
  2. I certainly don't aim to open myself up to being fined even though I do agree that it is a silly system. Until I renew my asic I just avoid those airports, it does frustrate me and I will get it again but I prefer that to a big fine.
  3. Where on earth is all this discount coffee? I might have to renew mine if I could reliably get discounted coffee!
  4. I still don't see why it couldn't be done in a similar way to the working with children check. 1. Organise the check online 2. Once confirmed attend an rta/rmc office and have them confirm your identity and take your photo 3. Done, no need to chase jp's or source passport photos ect ect
  5. The new jabs have hardly done enough hours to prove their reliability on a broad scale yet so they could be good but they are not a 'known'. Rotax's haven't changed (unless you are looking at an 912 is or a 915) so there are reliable stats out there. Your chances of getting to tbo with a rotax without big costs are pretty good but they require a fair bit of extra upfront cost. Basically my thinking would be if you can afford the original outlay go the rotax, but if funds are limited then the jab would be the go keeping in mind that 'some' have had to spend quite a bit of money on them before the placarded tbo. If going the jab then extra care would be needed to sort the cooling side of things whereas the rotax will be a lot more forgiving.
  6. Well how different would that be to planes which currently have a stall warning alarm? They are annoying just before touchdown too (some buzz the whole way down final approach) also in rough air. With a balance alarm of course it would be annoying in a side slip but you generally only sideslip on finals so wouldn't be any different to the stall alarm but would definitely be a benefit in normal manoeuvres. (Maybe it would actually help more of us to be more aware of how feet lazy we get in the air?
  7. Maybe an audible alarm for being out of balance would be more prudent than an Aoa alarm? That would do more for stopping a huge out of balance stall spin than an aoa alarm. Why hasn't that been developed?
  8. Just had a go and managed a 45 out of 50 but haven't got the email showing which ones I got wrong yet. Seems to be a few questions that have no relevance to maintenance but otherwise seemed ok.
  9. I still haven't even looked at this test yet, when do we have to have it done by to keep our priviliges? Mark I prefer solder myself but I thought I have read somewhere that it is a no no on an plane?
  10. No not at all if done right. We (a fellow YQDI flyer and myself) spoke about it to Jarod and Micheal at Tamworth and were surprised that it was met with positiveness. They said all it would take is a change to the wording in the employment contract that RAA employees sign to basically say that anyone working for RAA does so agreeing that they won't work for casa for a set time (5years should be fine) after there employment with RAA finishes. It needs bringing up at the next meeting to get it put in motion. I don't think there would be too many against it.
  11. Definitely more links. If the near miss was as close as it appeared that would be enough to rattle anyone add anything else on top of that and it's not hard to get overloaded.

    VENTURA 4 SEAT

I see no reason why I can't fly recreationally with my kids! Yes I think at this stage that is best done in GA BUT don't right off 4 seats as non recreational. In a perfect world commercial ops and private ops would be the only 'divisions' in aviation with private operating under RAA style rules and commercial regulated a bit more.
  13. Technically Captain it seems to be a limit to the size of battery you can use in flight, doesn't appear to be a size limit if you are just carting them and using them at your destination. dangerous goods for commercial flights may differ slightly to private ops too.
  14. Was there any mid air collision? Or where they just very close? Or was it just camera angle? The plane taking off had what looked like a fair bank angle when they were close. Even a near miss would be enough to elevate your heartrate and get your head too busy to concentrate on the basics.
  15. There is no point in Karma
  16. I Can understand not allowing non current members access to the members area but surely it wouldn't be too hard to limit non financial members to a renewal page?
  17. If you are doing a low pass for a low passes sake then that is illegal without the proper endorsements. Having said that I am all for casa giving warnings especially for first offences rather than having too heavy of a hand up front.
  18. It is an automated go around system Frank, on a hard landing the wings will flap generating more lift to give you extra time to apply power. Although I suppose really it would actually work more as an anti bounce system as when the wheels hit hard the wing would tilt up losing lift and hence avoiding the bounce:blush:
  19. My fuel cards still work with BO but I find the quality of any customer service tends to deteriorate:wink:
  20. It would be interesting to see an up to date price but when I looked it was well over 100k to buy. Drone tech to do the job is out there but the expense to set it up is prohibitive, much easier to pay a local aggie.
  21. Some of the prices I got on that a year or two ago make the warrior seem cheap
  22. I don't see what is funny about spacesailors post Frank? I'm not sure about other jabs but here is an extract from the j170 with a limit of 38 degrees.
  23. Who's seen Sully the movie? I just found an awesome sight feature, which has only been there since the beginning, called "search". It is an amazing feature and sometimes can be used to find things that have already been discussed:stirrer:
  24. Well Oscar I would assume that would be US dollars so probably 180-190k would be more realistic for Aus dollars, with that eventually ending up at around 250k aus$ in the long run by the look of what is written on their website. For an experimental build I would say that probably isn't too far off the mark. 130k Aus dollars would do a lot of others out of business but I don't think that is what they are claiming.
