  1. I've said it before but it can bear repeating. I started my LL endorsement (still haven't found the time to get it finished!) and that showed up some huge flaws. At height I flew perfectly balanced but low down with a breeze was an eye opener to how dodgy I became. IMO a low level endorsement does wonders for improving pilot skills, obviously it isn't the be all and end all but is a huge help. I do intend to finish my ll at my earliest convenience and would recommend everyone to do it.
  2. You should check out a bristel. One of our locals gets better than 120knots at 13-14lph
  3. Unfortunately, if this is the Ozzie you are talking about, he is no longer with us. Vale Steve Robards "ozzie"
  4. This photo shows why I love my hornet. A proper utility aircraft that doesn't need treating like a prim and proper lady, one that can handle being dirty and getting 'used'. It suits my flying style perfectly allowing me to do what I want to do (fly in and out of paddocks). I agree with what capt Wally said earlier though that we need a few planes to cover a few different performance envelopes, there are times I would love a 4 seat faster aircraft to take the whole family for a weekend away but truth be told 90% of my flying would still be in the hornet.
  5. An auto engine will run at 75% power all day every day with no hassles at all. An aero engine is built right on the limits in regards to weight which causes compromises. Auto engines aren't limited by anywhere near that extent.
  6. It happened in October last year. Camit closing
  7. Congratulations! I remember my first area solo better than my first solo, it is an awesome feeling flying away from the circuit by yourself for the first time!
  8. What say would atc have over western Tassie? I didn't think there was controlled airspace that far out?
  9. Spot on Pearo. When this thread started I thought to myself "this is what rec flying is about, people interested in flying helping each other" only to be taken over by an out of context legal argument. Sometimes I think we interpret rules worse than casa writes them!
  10. If it wasn't the manufacturers plane and they were just building the plane from plans it would also be a 19 registered plane.
  11. The trouble was that Neil's post seemed to be a direct personal attack to the pilot, he later made it obvious it wasn't meant to be that way and was soon fixed by the mods but I think he was rightly pulled up for it. I also think we are all grown up about it to move on and forgive him though. We should be mindful though of just how easy it is for relatives of missing/deceased people to find threads and I do believe we should think about that before we post. But how old are your 10 granddaughters? Without that info your argument has no weight to it.
  12. Not meaning to be nit picky but rotax engines are known to be used in training. Having said that I too hope that this latest engine is a winner, not particularly for jabs sake but for the sake of us rec flyers as a whole!
  13. The reputation of Opel quality is worse then ethanol blended mogas from what I have heard.
  14. Lol if some of the old fellas I know tried it with just maps and compass it would be a hilarious chain of disasters which may or may not result in a complete lap!
  15. There might be little evidence that they help but I have seen it with my own eyes that they can help pinpoint an aircraft that I hadn't seen without them.
  16. Assuming 'we' have no faults that will kill us and only 'they' do is a scary attitude to have. We are 'ALL' human. For sure we try and minimise the chances as much as we can but we are never immune from human error.
  17. The trouble is, without the flanges it is a flat flat pack flanges will increase package size by a smidge! I think I mentioned earlier that I love the idea of the riveted on edge especially for the flat package aspect.
  18. Personally I prefer the push rod idea compared to those Bowden cables, but each to their own. I can see they would be simpler but just don't tickle my fancy.
  19. Aww I thought I was going to find a thread of these As it turns out I can't be of much help, I carry one of those aerosol goo cans just in case but I haven't had any hassles since I put goo in my wheels. Running the bush wheels i have never had any balance issues but have heard from some people that the goo gives them horrible out of balance problems. With the aerosol cans I have had mixed results one particular brand kept blowing the lid when the tap was turned but the one I have now has worked fine. (So far only used in anger on farm bike tyres.)
  20. This seems like a perfect thread for "what's up Australia" What happened to the aviation only policy:amazon:
  21. Well I have certainly heard some drifter pilots 'Waffle on' but to be fair other pilots could be guilty of similar offences! But I can't help you with control blanking as I have not flown in a drifter yet but there are a few notable drifter pilots here who will no doubt jump in and help.
  22. That flamingo is a work of art, from what I have seen I don't think there is anything in an all metal construction to compare it with! Adrian I rarely land on an airstrip and totally understand those sentiments. It is well worth the trip to Taree to see Ole's setup and with a little prior notice they are always Very accomodating and as far as I am concerned even if you aren't buying a hornet you would leave learning something.
  23. I know I am a tad biased but I do love my hornet. It is heavier than a superstol and that does cost performance but it is still a super capable stol performer and is built to last. I know have seen quite a bit of the superstol and it is super impressive there is no doubt about that but I do prefer aluminium over fabric AND having the factory nice and close with faultless customer service is a winner for me. Having said that I do like Brett and am sure he would also be willing to go the extra mile for a customer, maybe I am just biased because the hornet was my first plane:blush:

Landing lights in daylight can help others see you a lot easier.
  25. Here is a couple of videos that show where drones can go, now these were just the first couple I spotted on YouTube there are hundreds of examples of drones well over 500ft
