  1. I don't spend a long time looking at the ASI but I certainly look at it fairly often, it only takes a glance to know where it is at. On smooth days it doesn't get as much attention from me as you can maintain your attitude and it won't change a great deal, however I find on gusty thermally afternoons I find myself doing the quick glance every few seconds when on approach. I find if I try to hold the same attitude (in regards to the horizon!) on those thermally days my airspeed can bounce from too close to the stall to over flap extension speed pretty quickly what I do find though is refraining from excessive elevator movements keeps the airspeed a lot steadier even though the nose goes up and down a bit more. It's not a bad habit to have a squiz at the skidball every third or fourth glance too, it can be surprising how much we have our rudder inputs out a tad or a big tad!
  2. I have to disagree. I used to think it was a tad rich to charge pilots but the more I think about it it is the fairest way. I think their pricing is realistic, if you aren't into air shows it only costs 10$ for the Thursday and then on the other end of the spectrum you can camp underwing for 35$ for 3 days seriously if anyone is complaining about these numbers they mustn't really enjoy catching up with friends at flyins and they certainly haven't done anything else in the real world for a few years because that is pretty good value! I don't think that is expensive enough to turn people off flying in, you have to look at what you get for your cash. 3 days catching up with others and seeing some nice aeros is surely worth more than less than 2 hrs of Mogas?
  3. Well what about aviators that drive a great distance? Does it cost us nothing to get there? I can understand the desire to have people who flyin pay less (or nil) as that can encourage people to flyin or at least that is the thinking but I can also see the fact that nothing is free these days and costs need to be covered. I think if we enjoy these sort of things then 30 odd dollars is very reasonable. Nothing is as cheap as it used to be, we drag our caravan around and often camp on the side of the road to save a few dollars, for us with two kids a caravan powered site is over $100 dollars per night these days at most caravan parks. generally they charge an extra 20$ per child so we are lucky just having two! Certainly different to when I was a kid only 20 years ago (yeah yeah some say I am still a kid!)
  4. My internet is dead slow here today Mick so I can't find out for sure but I remember the quicksilver factory shutting up shop a year or two ago, what I can't remember is if anyone took on the job of building them again? Are they still being produced by a new mob? I did like the look of them.
  5. Totally agree, when I first saw this thread I was thinking hmm getting the length wrong isn't a huge dealbreaker for me after all it is easy to get numbers mixed up but to call them nautical kilometres lol that is a bit much.

You would probably find it is as simple as waiting for final confirmation on air show timing or waiting until CASA approved the restricted area for said air show or some other little important detail to be finalised so that the info is 100%. I mean c'mon is 10days not enough time to plan the last part of your flight?

  9. I don't see anywhere where people flying in are being discouraged. Good on them for making it family friendly, I will be able to make it to this one albeit by road with the family in tow whereas if the family weren't going I would have had to stay home.
  10. Do you know where it came from? Was it a part of the fuel hose? It would pay to work it out as it may be the start of some deterioration somewhere in the fuel system.

  12. I am not a pro at spotting fakes but I think this one is legit, I think it is the heat haze that gives the impression of curved lines. The plane is doing exactly what the rudder is telling it to do.
  13. Do they have a two piece rudder? Or is half of it a trim tab? Just noticed in that video the top half of the rudder moving differently to the bottom half?

The perfect solution would be No medical required for ALL recreational flights up to 1500kgs Heavy vehicle medical for ALL recreational flights 1500kg to 5700kg Medicals required for ALL commercial passenger ops Heavy vehicle medical for commercial ops under 5700kg If those were the rules across the board RAA may suffer but it would do wonders for the industry.
  15. I don't see your point Turbs? RAA can't do aeros so having an area for us to do so would be pointless no matter how close to the aerodrome it was. Also if doing this sort of training would we not have an instructor with us? Just trying to work out why you were worried about the 25nm
  16. Maybe it would be more benificial to do Low level training? It certainly helps one to be more mindful of the planes balance rather than relying on the 'picture' of what the ground is doing. Spinning is not something we (most of us) do or plan to do on most of our flights whereas low level flight happens at least twice on all our flights. It seems to me that the majority of spins that kill people develop at low levels so why not practice low level?

  18. Does that work on all push button cars Bex? I hadn't really thought about them until now. I know our landcruiser won't turn off once rolling with a normal press but have never tried a long press, will have to try it when the better half comes home at the end of the week.

  20. Well personally I think we should never criticise anyone for pulling the red handle. How many times do we see the opposite, people killing themselves while leaving a perfectly good brs Unused. Who cares if it writes the airframe off? If it removes even just a little risk then it is for the better. In this example having no reliable nosewheel then certainly there would be an increased risk of overturning which was basically totally removed by deploying the brs. Imo using a brs should be looked at in the same way a go around is, we shouldn't criticise just have the attitude better safe than sorry.

  23. I am no expert but I think us blaming the title for the nonsense in this thread is a bit rich.

For My hornet my turbulence penetration speed is the same as my manuevre speed which is 70knots but I am too much of a sissy and prefer to sit on 50-60knots which also allows me to either throttle back and maintain height or leave full throttle on and climb up into hopefully smoother air. I don't like turbulence and no doubt like most of us rec flyers I avoid it where possible. I did have one interesting time flying over the range with mechanical turbulence, I had a passenger in with me and had only climbed a couple of thousand feet higher than what the range was and we were still climbing as there was a nice 10-15kmot tailwind I knew to expect a little bump once over the range but was surprised by a solid hit and saw the ASI peak at 90 (vne) for a split second before returning to 60. Certainly an eye opener for me especially as it was only blowing 10-15knots I certainly wasn't expecting anything that tough. I don't have a G metre and would find one interesting. I also don't have a brs and in turbulence is the only time I consciously wish I did. My flap extension max speed is 60knots but on a rough approach I leave them up until down to 50ish just to add a bit of an extra buffer. Avoiding turbulence like I do means I have a lot to learn so I also am watching this thread with interest.
  25. I am not 100% sure red but I think i heard in nsw they canned that rule as a mandatory thing within the last 12 months or so. The amount of times I have pulled in front of people who put their left blinker on to go straight ahead before they even get to the roundabout is staggering, all because they misunderstand the blink off rule. Anyway it maybe just a rumour, I am too lazy to check, but nevertheless I still indicate off but be careful as not everyone does what they are indicating they will do.
