  1. It makes perfect sense Geoff. You might just have to sit back and read it again a bit slower:amazon: It is similar to an athlete who can be ranked number 3 in Australia but has a world ranking of 467. The site ranks 8800 in Australia but because the world is a big place the ranking is 480000 which is lower because of the extra sites world wide.

  3. Gday Allan I've sent you a private message with the details that I know of the fella that owns the Hornet down there, I will chase up some more in business hours tomorrow (Friday) If you ever pass through Quirindi NSW with a little organising you could look at (and fly in no doubt!) My hornet as well as the local flock of just aircraft superstols As a side note I will post up a link of a thread that is about an orange hornet cub that now resides North of Alice springs. I think the tandem vs side by side depends entirely on what you plan on doing with it. If it will be predominately station work then the tandem makes perfect sense, but if you plan on taking a pax anywhere often then the side by side is certainly nice. Visibility out of a side by side Hornet is still awesome but obviously is a bit better in the tandem.
  4. There is a hornet STOL down in Tassie exact location I am not 100% sure of though I could probably find out:yes: Actually for that matter I think there is a couple up around Alice give or take a thousand ks or so.
  5. Ps most of us here will probably watch it again and laugh just as hard as the first time because we don't remember doing it a few days ago
  6. We understand Red, after all it is what happens as you age:amazon:
  7. I agree Nev. FT is a perfect example, he posts a lot of (IMO)nonsense that has me shake my head BUT occasionally he will post something quite interesting and I wouldn't want to miss those little goodies. (Don't mean to offend you FT, it is just how I see it and as we all know we all have our own biases!) Surely most of us can ignore someone if they are posting useless stuff without using a button!
  8. Just to be clear, are you talking about the phone numbers or Kenny Rogers?

  10. how did that fella get on? Is he back flying yet? Ps I love the idea of using 'buzz box 1234' (No I won't be using it, it just appealed to me!)
  11. But also a lot of potential for better redundancies than we are used to with single engine ops.
  12. The closest I have come was just on this last Monday evening. (Yes I know normally We wait a few years till we talk about our stuff ups but I'm not normal(-:) I had been out for a late arvo sunset flight (my favourite flying time) and had a passenger to drop off at a nearby farm. The farm strip (hardly a strip, it was a farm track with a gully one side and a corn crop on the other with washouts here and there) was one I had landed on before and all went well and I landed without any trouble and dropped off my pax. Now this was the first time with this pax and I had supervised his loading in but didn't watch him getting out which was the first link in the event. When he got out his trousers or leg must have bumped my park brake lever just enough which didn't affect my takeoff as I had lined up before he got out so I didn't use the brakes at all but it was when I got home that things woke me up! As part of my prelanding checks I squeeze my brake pedals to make sure I have pressure and this unwittingly locked my brakes on. (I will now be adding check park brake off to my list, I should've already done that but will explain that later) and the road I was using at home had a nice 5knot quartering crosswind but it was a fairly constant wind so nothing taxing and I had had a beautiful flight and was quite comfy with how it was all going that was until I touched down, upon touchdown of my upwind wheel it skidded causing the nose to swing towards the wind bringing down my other mainwheel and lifting my tail up to about level. It was an instant thing to bump power on to get some rudder and elevator authority but it was so so close and was enough to give my heart a good speed up. I was lucky that a few things were going my way, for starters once I had weight on the mains they spun as the brakes don't quite have the Oomf to lock them solid with the big wheels, and secondly always being taught to have the hand on the power in the circuit was totally essential, a split second of delay and I would've been around and had a bent wing at the least. So I was really the cause (isn't a ground loop always initiated by the pilot!) and I should've known better. Why? Well a month or so ago I took forumite old K for a local flight to scout some local strips and for any here that don't know him he has long legs and on top of that when we went I had the pax seat one hole forward so his legs were a bit far forward. Well in the time it took us to fly to the first strip his gangly legs had pulled the same park brake lever on. The landing was uphill and being a new strip I was planning on braking hard anyway so we did a nice short landing and I didn't notice anything wrong until I went to taxi, well it was on a little slope but I needed full power to move. I had my belt off to jump out and check things over before I spotted what had happened. So how's that for a classic human factors stuff up. I had knowledge of this happening but still didn't put enough emphasis on it to add it too my checklist as I justified it to myself as being a once off occurrence due to old ks long legs and incorrect seating position, not thinking that someone getting out a bit differently could do exactly the same thing. On top of putting it on my checklist I'm also now thinking of adding a lock to the park rake to totally rule out a similar problem. Anyway it's still fresh in my mind but is the only time I've ever felt close to ground looping so thought I would share.
  13. Actually since I updated to a new iPad Air the like buttons for me do have a double tap requirement, so I'm not sure if it is a deliberate change or just a fluke but I certainly like it and think it needs to be like that for all mobile devices.
  14. If you all think pipe threads are confusing you should have a look at some of the threads on recreational flying.com:teacher:
  15. Welcome Air lawyer1, I can't help you with your question but just wanted to welcome you seeing as you are basically local:thumb up:.
  16. You have a totally different measurement for 1nm than what I use old K:what the:
  17. Maybe we are training for EFATOs the wrong way. Currently we have the power cut and get to land straight ahead with an instructor and the only training we do on a turn back is off our own bat. I know, even with power available, doing a simulated EFATO with a turn back still has the risk of a stall/spin but maybe if it was practiced with an instructor in our initial training we would all be a lot more aware of why we don't/shouldn't attempt it. Not too different to doing stalls to show exactly why it isn't a good thing. Maybe in initial training may be too early? But it seems to me if things like this aren't included in our initial training then the majority of pilots don't get around to doing them.
  18. I am concerned about your skills Dutch, BUT maybe if I was to be taken for a flight in a Pitts with some basic aero skills demonstrated I could be convinced that you were quite competent . Would you like YQDIs coordinates?
  19. Maybe casa use ex Telstra call centre employees. if they don't know how to help you they will tell you it is impossible or get you to do something totally irrelevant to your original enquiry or transfer you to someone else in a department that has nothing to do with what you want. I find the best way is to hang up and ring back and keep doing that until you get someone who actually knows what they are on about. As for the English test, it isn't the only thing that reeks stupidity in the system. (Now that was a civilised comment!)
  20. I don't think anyone is arguing about the base to final turn, even those pro rudder on final say that all turns in the circuit should be balanced. I do prefer to setup holding my line with rudder for at least the last 100feet, earlier if it is windier just so I get a feel for how much wind and obviously on the really windy days it helps me to know if I have enough rudder authority to do the job or if I need to change technique (less flap and a bit more speed). I have used the crab and kick technique but find it a lot more workload for the same result.
  21. That's a good idea Andy. Seeing as you are a tech guy, would it be possible to set up a mobile phone in a similar configuration to a wireless home phone? What I mean by that is can you have a remote hand piece for your mobile? So you could send up your base station on your drone and then once at altitude make proper phone calls from a handset. I know we already have wireless earpieces and other such accessories but are there any full size wireless handset options that would be viable or buildable? If that was doable it might be a nice alternative to getting a sat phone.
  22. I could cover some ground with that sort of tailwind, actually I'd probably cover just as much ground if I had it as a headwind:thumb down:
  23. Well with that logic cyclists and soccer mums should be made to get the same medical as a commercial truck driver? That seems to me to be totally illogical. Why not have it required at just controlled airports and for those directly involved (flying and loading) with the RPTs?
  24. Robbo can you give any reason for them to be needed at places like Narrabri? IMO the ASIC was a ill thought out knee jerk reaction that no one in power feels they can reduce/remove because of the fear of an illusion of lesser security. I think in bigger airports and for those directly involved with RPT aircraft that they serve a purpose but for the majority of rural security controlled airports it would not reduce or affect security in any way if they were removed (or more realistically reduced to only major airport hubs maybe even just the controlled airports)
  25. Emotive hogwash Robbo. I have an ASIC, which is due for renewal soon and I will renew it because I occasionally want to land at places like Narrabri, and Dubbo but I am also one of those that think it is totally useless at most airports they are 'needed' at. But to say because I think that way that I don't deserve the privilege of holding a licence (I actually only have a certificate) IMO borders on rediculous. To say they stop potential criminals is also an overstatement, theoretically they should stop criminals (those with a record) but how on earth can you stop potential criminals? We would all be potential crims. I think at places like Narrabri they are a complete and total farce. A few weeks ago on my way to a property west of Moree I was busting for a leak and pulled into Narrabri, I hadn't planned on stopping there so my ASIC was stowed away and seeing as I was busting I just jumped out and hopped over the fence and then once more relaxed I hopped back over and unpacked my ASIC just for show really. So really at a regional airport like that does the ASIC serve ANY purpose? Certainly leaving it in the plane did not slow me down at all and I can't see how a terrorist without one would be disconvenienced (is that even a word?) at all. As for saying if we can afford to fly then the extra 200$ shouldn't be a problem, SO WHAT. All those extra $ add up and just because I'm a pilot and fly doesn't mean I have extra money to throw around and even if I did why would I want to be wasting it on something that i see no real benefit from?
