  1. Yes deep pockets is what you need to fly in the current bird !!! David
  2. What we need is a very smart person in invent a fusion reactor, I think that's the right one, the same reaction that goes on in the Sun and produces no radiation issues, after they plonk one of them on the tail of a rocket then I may be comfortable to go into space !!!! David
  3. Where's the warp drive ??? that would be the only way you would get me to go up there, I would not sit on fire crackers that's for sure !!!! David
  4. Well if 50% of all members were prepared to pay a subscription to cover most of the costs of the paper version it remains to be worked how much that 50% would need to pay to enjoy their magazine, remembering that you have advertisers that are also paying the costs towards producing the mag, now what about the other 50% that want the electronic version. I think it has already been determined that there is also a cost to this, so are these members prepared to put their hands in their pockets to help produce this version of the magazine? or do they think there membership monies alone should cover these costs, IMO I think they should also pay a subscription, less than what the paper version will be no doubt but none the less they need to pay something to ensure that both versions are eventually cost neutral. Now a much smarter person than me needs to canvas quotes for both versions and come up with the costs to members, let's hope this can be done in a timely manner and not dragged out !!! David
  5. Why can't we have both, maybe in the next magazine or maybe simple email sent out to all members and ask members which one they prefer, electronic or paper and that's what they will receive each month, it would also be a good guide as to the general feeling of the proposal for the electronic magazine, I know which one I would be ticking. I know some of us have issues with paying for a subscription to get a paper mag but I would not mind at all to pay some extra money each year to the have the magazine sent to me in my preferred format. I believe that we seem to have the right people running our organization now, so in saying that, I need to believe that they will manage our finances in a well managed and transparent fashion so that if I do pay a subscription to my magazine this money will be used for this purpose alone !!! We know costs are going up every day and we can not expect that our membership fee's and costs associated with running the organization will not go up accordingly, nothing stays the same. David
  6. Well IMO if I am allowed, is I think it's a mistake to drop the paper magazine, have we looked at other publishers, editors, etc before we make such a decision. I don't like reading electronic versions of any magazine, I like Geoff, look forward to the day when my magazine comes to my letterbox so I can sit down and read it cover to cover and then again the next day if I so wish, I have all my magazines for the last 12 months, much to my wife's displeasure but that's another story. So what our leaders are telling us here is that there is no way we can continue to have a paper magazine in it's current form..I find that hard to believe that we have exhausted all other options before we took the step to cancel and go to an online version? Well that's my opinion whether it is right or not... David
  7. Do you think he would join RAA? David
  8. Andy, So when the decision was made to pull the magazine from the newsagents were the businesses that advertise in there consulted to get their views and about whether they will be getting their moneys worth in advertising and if they were consulted how many I wonder are still going to be there, don't we gather income from these businesses through their advertising fees? David
  9. Well ok let's not get to bogged down on whether Facebook or Twitter is better or not, I think we all agree that we need new members young and older, lets face it, most young people don't have a lot of disposable income to throw at flying, it is good to target the young ones but we must not forget the older gen either. Ian tell me if I am wrong but your chat feature has not worked has it? I think because the older members couldn't be bothered with chatting and there is probably not enough younger members here to use it either, so, if what you are saying is correct the young ones want chat, what you need to do is have a very bright and exciting chat site with all the things we do as an organization running down the sides and based on flying..maybe videos, photo's, contact numbers etc. I not expert in marketing but if we need new young members we need to go where they hang out and just remember that all the sites you put up are mainly US site with US teenagers, I think out teens and early 20's gen are a but different to their US and UK counterpart, seems like that to me anyway. David
  10. Andy, Ok 2 years ago at Heck Field.. since then can we say where all the other majors meetings have been held? Yes I think we all know that there are technologies around that we can use, bearing in mind some members don't have a computer or internet. I think there is a post from about 2 years ago where this was talked about this and yet we are no closer, I would think to this technology? why is that... no money...to hard basket.. we all say we want more members to be involved in the running of our show yet we seem to be very slow on making it happen. The more members we loose the more our income drops hence now we are talking about subscriptions for our magazine and then taking them out of the newsagents, that is a really good way of missing out on new members dropping one of the few ways that we have of advertising what we do to increase our membership !!!!!!! I haven't even touched on the businesses that advertise in the magazine, what do they think about taking away their exposure through the newsagents, has anyone asked them? Crazy idea in my opinion. David
  11. I would love to go to the AGM's and other meetings to vote and have my say but only when they are accessible to me and not out the back of woop woop..why can't we have these major meetings in rotation in the capital cities? I want to be able to book a cheap Jetstar flight and come down there for the meeting and come home in one day..not 5 days of driving and accommodation costs.. David
  12. Don, In my opinion there are 3 ways.... 1) Make them feel safe to fly small RAA aircraft. 2) Make it affordable for them. 3) Make it exciting and fun. Number 3 is almost as important for them as item number 1, and if we want young people to be interested in flying RAA well that's where they are...Facebook...Twitter and the like that's where we advertise what we do !!!!!! That is what I think the "Y" gen are looking for but then what do I know I am old fart... David

  20. eightyknots, Victor Yanukovych was corrupt as was his government, they were sitting in Putin's corrupt pocket, yes there were some radicals in his removal from office but in the main the people that booted him out of office simply had had enough of him and his governments corrupt ways, the majority of people were normal Ukrainians. The east of the Ukraine is made up of Russian speaking people and during the communist days this area was the industrial heartland of the USSR, Putin doesn't want to loose this area as he didn't want to loose the Crimea, what happened to the original inhabitants of the Crimea? Putin will do just about anything not to loose the east of the Ukraine, watch this space. My wife is Russian and my son's girl friend is from Odessa in the Ukraine, you should talk to the people that live there and not believe everything you hear and read about Russia and the Ukraine most of it is not true or the information is only given out by the state run newspapers and TV stations. David
