  1. Getting the hang of the 182 differences now. 6 out of 6 landings that I was pleased with on Saturday morning. You tube helped. I watched Gary Wing's and Ron Michado's videos over and over this week before going, found knowing what the view should look like throughout the approach and landing helped.
  2. Hi Guys, I'm in the 182, the other chap is in the 172. Ralph, I showed you pm list to the instructor after my first go, so I didn't come across as a know better type. He liked the ideas presented. We have loaded half of the weights in the rear, with a marked improvement in how much elevator is left to use on the flare. I am going to add another 20 kg for next time. I am just going to hope that the wind stays down for Wednesday morning, so that I can really get a feel for the aircraft without the challenges of cross wind on top of it. The grass strip would have only had 10 degrees off centre line the other day. Cheers Clint
  3. We tried 20 degree with some power on which improved things, might try 10 or less to see how that does, after all we have 2200m to play with.
  4. Never, when it is for fun , why would you do that to yourself. Also find it a bit easier to keep the nose wheel up in sport star. 30R was the duty RWY today, with all the other bigger/faster/more experienced traffic around I doubt they would have given permission for the grass X strip. The next one should be better, early morning has consistently had less wind here. Then it will prove if it is me or conditions. Either way I have to learn to handle things better if I want to play in the big playground.
  5. Going through the same trials again late today, good 15 knot cross wind gusting 20 on second lesson of circuits in my 182. Horrendous landings ( compared to the sport star on a calm day) I am hoping for no wind on my next early morning lesson. There is a lot more going on especially when learning to operate in CTA at the same time. I would like to show the instructor I can do a lot better. With 80 plus hours up on RAAus aircraft, I was thinking it would not be so tricky to get on the ground, the flying bit is fine I find that part quite easy. Good luck with it for both of us
  6. Had my first official lesson in the 182 today. It was a surprise to experience the full envelope of performance. 40KIAS with full flap to 130 KIAS clean. The weight difference is noticeable from a RAAus machine also. I think I'm going to enjoy this transition
  7. I have weighed myself, the mrs and 2 kids, even the 182 can only Carry us plus 250L of fuel and 20 kg of equipment/luggage. At least that is 4 hrs plus reserves. I have learnt Even bigger craft have limits. Will have to keep dieting for a bit more.
  8. That's awesome. Don't want that wind to die even with the big flaps. Would love to learn enough to be able to do that one day.
  9. Has anyone actually stated they are going to take away your right to fly small 1 person machines or not let you operate them out in the boonies ie class g. To some the CTA access will be great. Our training facility teaches us in CTA then takes it off you until 1530 on a Saturday or Sunday, which is quite limiting when shorter days are in effect.(same up till 0800in mornings) Weight limits, they are talking about going up, not taking away from bottom end of scale. The greenies have been spouting no gas guzzling fossil fuel cars for the past 30 years I can remember and no one is taking away our dinosaur ones yet, even thought the Prius etc is here. Some people who like to criticise the people at the top, do have the option to nominate if they wish to stand up. We need RAAus to be able to fly legally. Until some one comes up with a working other option what can you do. I doubt there are a lot of wives/husbands out there in the real world who would let there spouses, father or mother of their children hop into something that looks like a hills hoist raped a lawnmower and be happy about it. We have evolved for better or worse into a more modern fleet. I love old stuff (still own Valiants) but I would not be allowed to do that kind of stuff anymore. If we were all honest most wouldn't despite what we may tell ourselves or the divorce rate would skyrocket.
  10. Go Biggles. Could be like Stirling Moss for Chrysler. (I'm a Mopar man)
  11. Nothing like a stroll down the street to work to knock out the hours. Used to live a few Kay's from my workshop, home for dinner, back to work until 1 or 3 am. 30 km commute now makes me really consider is it worth it now= more time not at work, yay.
  12. Did you have to move buildings Bex? The background looks different
  13. Had my first flight in my C182 today. It was different than I expected in a good way (after smaller Raa aircraft) Can't wait to start travelling in it.
  14. :laugh:They should offer free wheel cleaning on the way past with little brushes on the roof, that would be a novel way to offset the house cost.
  15. Isn't it strange that those houses look fairly new, if you are worried about aircraft operations that close don't build next to an existing airstrip, spend a bit more on land somewhere else. You don't hear about airparks having a higher number of aircraft meeting buildings than anywhere else. None of us tries to have a bad day like these unlucky flyers have had. They would have just wanted to enjoy a great outing in their aircraft. Hope they are recovering well.
  16. sorry guys. am not at home and come into room at hotel to see news flash with no details. just said homebuilt aircraft crashed. assumed it was another of our raaus planes. news like this is always bad. not good for family to see when trying to convince them to hop in with you.
  17. news reporting homebuilt flipped over after landing?
  18. they were pretty slick looking 20 years ago. one of my first instructors had one in tasmania.
  19. Why??? With traffic and no room. Only in Russia
  20. Not the only one here like that. something to do with spending more time on a planet with gravity maybe. Or at least that's my excuse.
  21. Last weekend just replaced my 1mm alloy one with a 0.016 s/s one. Removed all the unnecessary holes, grommets in all the others, tightly sealed. I'm a little more confident in the fire resistance now. HITC, liking your build. It's giving me assurance that a the improvement I'm doing to the Bushbaby is on the right path to making it sturdier.
  22. My Great Wall is at 134,000km. Unloved and still goes good, actually getting better fuel economy now. Rattles yes, lights on dash that shouldn't be yes. But runs great. Even got a nice set of Broncos number plates.
  23. I think I used to pay $90hr back in the 1990's for lessons in a Thruster, wages were around $220 before tax. Our local school Sportstar has been $240hr dual, and $140hr wet hire with user pays landing fees. Compared to owning an aircraft this comes up good. My own "cheap" purchased aircraft has been laid up 3 years being made sound enough to hop back in and use. Finally nearly there but a lot of time and money has been put in.
  24. I doubt that tow line would have broken if he caught it. It would have been a hell of a shock. The still picture shows there would have of been less than half a metre clearance.
  25. Maybe we should vote Australia Post out. June turned up on 1st of July, July not here yet. I use a PO box and am next to a rural city and still can't get things on time ie bills, mags. Order something from the US and its here in a week even through customs. Go figure?
