  1. I would love to build, but I love to fly more. I have a 65-70kt Raa plane in shed, but the allure of speed has resulted in a 120kt Cessna 182f. its plenty fast enough. That keeps you on your toes enough to log on trips. And the sums are good at 2 NM a minute, and 1litre a minute fuel( gives a little extra safety margin).
  2. Found it to be working a lot better now. Used in anger on a real mission the other day, had paper on knee board and checked I pad to see if dead reckoning was working. Builds confidence to see the line matching what you are seeing on ground and paper. Thanks for all your tips.
  3. The day I did my rpc test was the hottest on record here for years, and after 4pm in the arvo at 1350’ amsl (density alt was close to 5000 feet) we took over 3 nm to reach 500 feet for our first turn,it was 45 degrees c. Other cooler days I have been at 500 before 1/4 the way down the runway. it can be suprising how big of a difference temp plays in performance when first starting out. Now I look a beaut day and if it’s too hot I don’t even bother thinking about flying.
  4. Does anyone know how to turn off the red(sometimes blue) bar on top edge of an iPad with ozrunways recording on it. My battery runs down quick when happening. Sometimes I am only planning or investigating places to go and will not be flying. I have searched the menus and iPad settings for an off selection. It does not seem obvious to find. Thanks
  5. Imagine. back in the good old days, we could have been workers going to work, building things with our own hands just like that in our own country.
  6. Is the project still going Bex?. I was keenly following your progress. Cheers
  7. Aeroflyte brings back memory’s of fun with collected money. Had a control line mustang for a 12th birthday present from my dad. Never flew it but loved building it. Was the beginning of the end for me with the aviation bug. Wish I still had all of my collection including the cox e-z-bee.
  8. That cuts me out. Would need extra 20kgs on margin to even try one.
  9. 18 when started, 19 year gap when took back up at 37. Got RAA cert at 38 and RPL at 42. Only problem is working to pay to play takes up too much time.
  10. Depends what month your birthday is, round up or down on months
  11. SDQDI, Where did you find your helmet?. It is something I have thought about for when Bushbaby is ready for same reasons ( too many bars close to ones head). Cheers ClintonB
  12. We worry about little things like a splutter or miss in an engine, iPad failure etc , these aircrew not only had chunks of the plane missing to contend with, but being shot at as well. Makes one appreciate their bravery and will to get the job done and get home.
  13. It’s good that regular people can still do this after the events of 17 years ago. Nice way to sight see all those places without the crowds.
  14. Roadkill is not all that bad, I don’t buy food court Indian because it looks the same going in as out.
  15. Finally a break in the wind if not the heat, I got to go for a fly in C182. I took my son for a ride to the coast with intention of landing at Old Bar for a dip in the ocean. Crosswind was more than I was comfortable with, so a quick diversion to Taree to visit some friends instead. Still a great day. Back in YSTW the tar was melting in Front of the hanger.
  16. I had to get an English language form, a transfer form for RAAus to RPL form, a form for the instructor to fill in with whatever endorsements I was adding to my rpl. If you have a cross country endo already it can go across when compency demonstrated ( everything goes past faster at 120knots,you really have to keep on it) but if you don’t you are limited to the 25 nm radius. Along with existing asic, proof of I’d and log book copies certified by a suitable person. Only just completed last month, so a fairly recent experience. Cheers Clinton
  17. HITC, I am only asking because my LAME who is helping with the Bushbaby rebuild got real jumpy when I suggested using graphite as a lube. Is graphite ok for use on 4130. He had explained that graphite works it way into the metal at a molecular level and can cause strength problems. I was going to use it on the same type of nylon block control mounts where mine go cross ways for dual sticks, They were binding and I ended up with 0.005" plastic shim material and grease in the end which freed up the controls perfectly. cheers clint
  18. that must be 1 tuff model and retract sets to hold him up. I WANT ONE!!!!!
  19. Maybe we need the training syllabus to be expanded to cover this more as part of our RPC. I know our local Sportstar was placarded "no spinning" and the stalls done during basic exercises introduces you to the buffet and gentle nose drop that occurs. I was told that using the buffet if occurs will indicate that you need to correct before the stall, But this does not help if you are caught out by inattention or distraction and a wing drop occurs. From what I have read not every plane uses the same recovery technique, so hard opposite rudder, close throttle, ease rudder off as spin stops, then exit dive gently may not help(this is what I have tried to remember just in case it is ever needed)- especially if you are too disorientated to figure out which way the spin is to start with. I would like to go somewhere and do a solid block of training in upset recovery with a good and patient instructor, I would consider this a good insurance policy for longevity.
  20. We could all take away from this that rules and regulations are there to be adhered to for our own benefit. A few individual mistakes or deviation from how we are taught to do things compiled together had this terrible result-which when reading who would want to put their family and friends through.
  21. Took my first solo flight in C182 today. Never sweated so much, looking across at the empty seat on the right made me think no stuff ups allowed. Once I was airbourne and completed that first circuits’ checks I felt better and more comfortable. A few more short hops on my own should do the trick. Just hoping the weather plays the game over the next few weeks.
  22. RIP all, I was only admiring that very aircraft circling as we left on a Cruise boat a fortnight ago.
  23. At least he can see the wind direction
