  3. I was at a party / drinking hullabaloo over 30 years ago - a person I knew (we always had a talk (not a close personal talk though but as new friends do)) as I approached him he said off the cuff .................. 'look at me John standing around here like a stale bottle of pi55' I don't know if I was supposed to understand the seriousness of the comment or it was a yell for help I did not hear - I never actually considered it until much later days later that he left this world by his own hand his sum total would have amounted to a lot and all would have said that - a nice bloke ................... I think now - if only I had of listened
  4. can someone summarise the $ numbers for this plane (rubbery numbers below) roughly - $ 17,200,000,000 (17.2 $b) purchase cost - divided by say $ 95,000,000 / plane = 180 planes ? may be each plane flys say 150 hours per year @ $ 40,000 / annum = $ 1,080,000,000 (1.08 $b) ? seems like a bargain
  5. my dad had +10000 hours in tail draggers including a lot in the DHC2 beaver - I did many hours sitting with him as a 25 kilo copilot I first took him up in a 152 and on take off he turned to me and chuckled ............... like, is this thing going to get us off the ground - never thought about engine power till that point :) then say a year later when I was in town he took me down to the aero club and there was only one plane available - a piper cub but it only had a stick in the front. It was a perfect day and he said you fly it son and i'll sit in the back (to instruct) - so off we went for half an hour. Its the only tail dragger I've actually ever flown - even till now some 30 years later - a great memory of the old boy

  7. One month late might be a bit severe ..... how about ...... ? In any case its a bit like putting fuel in the tank ..... there no economy or excuse for running out of gas - dont stop passing the pennies

  14. The purpose of the flight should also be considered - you might stumble there to Only simple one I can think of: ........................ If each person has a chocolate bar that would be OK - of there was 100 kgs of chocolate int back - that might not be OK

  17. wikipedia - could be true .................... some have mentioned these reasons - sounds fair to me 'wiki quote The extra weight provided by the water ballast is advantageous if the lift is likely to be strong, and may also be used to adjust the glider's center of mass. Moving the center of mass toward the rear by carrying water in the vertical stabilizer reduces the required down-force from the horizontal stabilizer and the resultant drag from that down-force. Although heavier gliders have a slight disadvantage when climbing in rising air, they achieve a higher speed at any given glide angle. This is an advantage in strong conditions when the gliders spend only a small amount of time climbing in thermals. The pilot can jettison the water ballast before it becomes a disadvantage in weaker thermal conditions'
  18. Remind us oscar ..... whats the water ballast for? Whats the forward lhs cockpit lever .... pilot slidind it fore and aft ? Thanks
  19. best use a 'votex cannon' for them birds - link below
  20. yes - club members planes (in various hangar locations on the strip) and club members hangars BT (local Council insists on hangar keepers insurance - hanger sites are leased from Council) I'd be guessing we would have 10 hangars and say 12 planes covered this way Also, I don't know if 'the club' is the mechanism - could be 'a group' of persons might be able to achieve the same result
  21. yes - if you are lucky ? enough to have an aero club at your strip - multiple hangars and planes can be lumped into one policy (hangars and planes separate) and you can get good / great savings on insurance premiums
  22. here is a message I got from an insurance broker .............. might shed some light on it I can confirm that the Australian Allianz office for aviation will no longer be offering renewals or quoting new risks from the 1st January 2017. However, the head underwriter from Allianz will be starting up an agency (Agile) on the 1st January with the intention of continuing to write aircraft programmes just like the one we have arranged for aircraft based at xxxxxxxxxxxxx Although Allianz is withdrawing from the Australian aviation market on the 1st January, a number of their underwriters and their claims manager will remain until the 31st December 2017 ensuring changes to policies and claims are processed smoothly. When the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx aircraft programme and Hangarkeepers liability policy falls due for renewal next year we will approach the market (QBE, Catalyst, AIG, Swiss Re) as well as Agile for terms.
  23. Superannuation: with bankruptcy there is no protection ................................. in relation to other litigation - superannuation is protected - is this perhaps correct ? 'Interestingly, superannuation has statutory protection from creditors if you are a small business owner. “Unless the business owner makes an unusual contribution to defeat the creditors when they know litigation is on the cards, super is protected,” says Balalovski.'
  24. I thought superannuation was a safe haven for assets ? (.......................... if you have any spare to shovel in there)
