  1. When I started learning to fly noisy aeroplanes, I got quite a few work colleagues asking me "Why would you want to learn to fly at your age?" I was only 50. There will always be people ready to question your choices especially if you decide to do something a little unconventional. (Not fitting their stereotype). I use it as a extra motivation. Life is too short to let others spoil my fun.
  2. Some famous Australian pioneer avaitrix: Millicent Bryant 1878 - 1927 Florence Taylor Bonney, Lores 1897 - 1994 Freda Thompson 1906 - 1980 Jean Batten 1909 - 1982 Peggy McKillop 1909 - 1999 Jessie 'Chubbie' Miller 1910-1972 Nancy Bird-Walton 1915 - Suzanne Duigan 1924 - 1993 Fran West 1952 - Gaby Kennard Janine Shepherd 1962 - Allana Arnot 1967 - Neither gender nor age should discourage you from adventure. Learning something as complex as driving a flying machine will have its ups and downs but if you are keen to succeed and willing to keep learning, you will succeed. And it is so very rewarding.
  3. Or if it was steaming fast, you might not actually catch up with it.
  4. I think it's cheaper than getting a driver's licence. It takes a log book of 100hours for a driver's licence. Most of us get a recreational pilot's certificate in a lot less those hours.
  5. I believe it wasn't Wagner's idea to call it Brisbane West.
  6. Apart from all that cynicism, If you ask no questions, you have no answers.
  7. This survey is a great opportunity for everyone to tell RAAus in no uncertain terms, what we think about all the stuff I see posters here complaining about:- The push for CTA (access or transit only, and under what proviso) The push for 1500kg MTOW (or other weight, and under what conditions) The lack of feedback after a survey The lack of information to confirm what policy or rule changes are (or are not) happening. Etc....... Don't complain about the survey. Just do it.
  8. Yeah, I'd rather buy it from Clear Prop anyway, thanks Ian!
  9. As far as CASA care, if the hand held is labelled with the correct model, they'd be hard pressed to complain. But if you want to know if the radio actually transmits a good signal, you'd have to get a qualified tech to put it on a spectrum analyser, modulation monitor, etc.
  10. That's only $6 cheaper than your 'fairly tight band' of prices (assuming the price band was plus postage). Not radically cheaper. Anyway are Icom made in china?
  11. The wide screen in-flight entertainment enhancement. You wouldn't want your passenger to get bored would you? PS, BP, I hope you have a safe storage for the remote control. It could end badly if your passenger drops it. As for the aerodynamics, that screen is just like a big vortex generator. Scaled up to work at "drifter speed". Might make the drifter even easier to land short?
  12. Our local coffee shop has a sign over the pissoir. It reads... "Please consider our neighbours when you leave. Minimise the noise. Harley riders, this does apply to you, too." Furthermore, I'm annoyed. When I got knocked back on a roadworthy because my exhaust was 6Db too loud, I pointed out that most HD's were louder, he said "Yeah, I know. But they're Harley's". Grrr!
  13. Humour? Ooooh, I thought it was a good idea! By the way, Frank, have you got that passenger enhancement yet?
  14. I've put it to the test when I had EFATO at about 200'. The automatic reaction steadily pushed the stick forward, maintaining glide speed and committed to straight ahead landing off the end of the field. That was the limit of the automatic reaction. Then I had a big delay (probably only 4 seconds) while my brain did the wtf routine. Then it was way too late to do any engine check or attempt a restart. My cognitive reasoning kicked in and carried out the landing without incident. After the adrenaline wore off I thanked my instructor. The training had kicked in as it should.
  15. Gliding taught me instant response to the "nose down" after loss of the/O thrust. There was no room for a wtf moment, it was a trained instant movement, perhaps a mental connection between hearing the windspeed, and the hand.
  16. Mike, I think most of us (not just greenie swampys) strongly resent being collectively screwed over financially by a foreign business that seems to have a very dodgy track record and seems to have lied or at least greatly exaggerated the job creation and long term economic benefit of their proposed coal mine.
  17. I once met a bloke who knew someone who SAID they drank Foster's. Once.
  18. We all know that a millionaire criminal never deserves punishment as much as a poor criminal...... At least that's how it works out in the real world.
  19. Also it's a warning about how some operators view aircraft maintenance. (As far as an accountant can see, maintenance is a drain on profits). Maybe the passengers were protected because they were travelling to Mecca. Reading between the lines, it appears that good old USA is not above corruption any more than the African owner of the Jumbo. He only served a couple of months of his rather light four year sentence in USA.
  20. Ever wonder what happened to that Jumbo that lost its cargo door, way back in 1989? It had an interesting life .... https://airscapemag.com/2016/05/23/united-flight-811/ This is my first attempt to post a link. Hope it worked.
  21. Might be worth noting that VDO have two different catalogues. This can cause confusion, depending on where you source your sender. In USA, a 360-004 sender has a 1/8 NPT In Australia, a 360-004 has a 1/4 NPT. It seems that in Australia, a 360-002 has a 1/8 NPT thread (1000kpa or 150psi full scale) Check carefully before committing to using anything on a Rotax.
