  1. Obviously wasn't there so I will keep my comment brief but I would be very hesitant to continue descent through another AC reported level without knowing that I was past their reported distance OR they had reported maintaining 1 or more miles off GPS track OR they were N/S/E/W of a location/feature and I was on the other side. Still being in/above IMC only the first two would apply here. On another note most PPL/RA guys normally give a good amount of room for the commercial/rpt boys and girls if they are uncomfortable dealing with the separation especially with IFR traffic which is greatly appreciated and may not be thanked enough. Not to say that it wasn't the case here.
  2. I get soo annoyed with the ASL exams trying to trick you into the wrong answer, its a lazy mans way of testing. The wording is horrid and doesn't seem to be getting any better. Things like "The IAS decreases but FF reduces" or "Which answer best describes" followed by 4 answers that are not the correct answer so you need to find the most/least correct.
  3. Interesting to note, just watching the news and the reshuffle will give us the 2nd largest cabinet in Australian history, largest since Fraser, and still no minister for aviation, let alone transport...
  4. Was Darren Chester pre election, hasn't changed to my knowledge,
  5. Any comment on why that may have been guys? What considerations are you guys going through before a decision to/not to shutdown is made specifically with oil temp/pressure abnormalities? I would have thought considering OEI performance is good, a shutdown even precautionary would be a high chance with oil issues before failure occurs?
  6. When I was a kid (about 3) I decided to jump our 6 ft Pailing fence and hide in our neighbours box trailer under a tarp. Can't remember how long mum said I was there but she had everyone out looking for me, coppers etc! You would probably end up in the care of docs for that sort of stuff these days I suppose. .....
  7. I noticed the other day that Bob Tait is now doing Rec stuff. His CPL stuff was the best by far.
  8. Had mine for about a year now with a few hundred hours of use, mine every now and again can't seem to get itself sorted but so does my G96 and G196 so no biggie as far as I'm concerned. I only bother with it at night and in IMC and it's been invaluable.
  9. Total power loss isn't the only emergency in aviation. Lots aren't time critical.
  10. Nodoze for when I can't get int town for a coffee.
  11. Quite a few here fly IFR/CTA and more have CPL/PPL... Maybe now that those pesky navaids have gone they will return to profit.
  12. Normally it's not one WAC but a whole of AUS pack with the edges cut off and then put together.
  13. Btw for those who use FB it can be shared on there. I got a few extra by doing that.
  14. I know of companies that refuel from part full drums so it wouldn't be illegal. With that tho they own the fuel and have a secure place for it to be stored, correctly and out of the weather, there is a way to do it and many ways where I wouldn't accept it.
  15. I started with the sierra and bang for buck couldn't beat them, but my recommendation would be a used set of Zulus/Bose as it would be about the same price even with replacement earpads and mic protector. Not cheap by any means but great value compared to the passive sets.
  16. Got to say I agree with Dutchie here, if it occurred as reported (no reason to believe otherwise), and was late/short final and simulated by a "mag cut" I would be far from impressed. The engine off thing as a whole I've no issue with and a "mixture cut" would be considered common place in GA but would be briefed beforehand, normally on some sort of check ride and I have never seen it done anywhere that would be considered short final, If it happened,I would be equally unimpressed.
  17. Gen 3.4 4.1.5 and Gen 3.4 4.4.3 are the AIP references Jabba.
  18. Yes correct. They are not online but I'm sure someone here who is literate in both could provide a reference, short of that the same is stated in the AIP in the same section that covers communication and phraseology. If you can't find it I'll have a look through it when I get home this arvo.
  19. Jeppes are the AIP, just a different format and approved by CASA. So same legal reference.
  20. Gday Frank, extended visit to Sydney at this stage, left my last job in December as it wasn't going anywhere, down here doing a bit of twin stuff, renewal and the last of my ATPL's. Was back in Cairns first but missed out on what was up there. Few opportunities round here at the moment so whilst things are going good here I'll stick around. If it dries up I'll be back up to Cairns and wait it out.
  21. Just had a google of the definition of should, found the following link. Post # 14 gave me a good giggle. Legal meaning of "should" vs "shall" - Straight Dope Message Board
  22. The only help that I can be is, if you are after a regulation the AIP is USUALLY no help but, CAR 82A says " casa may give direction to words or phrases used and this will be in the form of the AIP or NOTAMS" or close to that anyway as I can't paste it. This now makes not adhering to the (I us jepps) communication section, or AIP, a breach of 82A. Then in the AIP somewhere (AU 915.6.1.5 for jepps) in the communicationssection that the "following information whilst primarily for controlled airspace should use these phrases unless specific class G procedures are shown." Then 6.3.3 goes on to say that " reported level figures must be preceded by flight level when referenced to standard pressure and feet when referenced to QNH" That now making using feet with anything apart from QNH In breach of 82A. Also there is not reference to AGL that I've seen in my late night reeding of it so therefore, wouldn't be directed by casa. I apologise for the jepps references but I don't even know how to spell AIP let alone cross reference them. So it's kind of an asre about way of getting there but if they were to prove that wrong they have more time and effort to put into it then I have. But with that now out for all of the Internet to see I'll imagine someone will come up with something, and my bet is the legal definition of should.
  23. Gents, how come around Sydney, Adelaide etc but I'll use Sydney as my example, I'm passed on to "Sydney center" and sometimes "Sydney Radar" (possibly others) being the same freq? Does it matter how they are referred to after first contact? Because I nearly always end up calling them "center" in later calls after forgetting it was radar.
