  1. Turbs I'm not saying that the Media report is wrong what I am saying is that it is evidence of nothing. A proper and complete investigation should be conducted and a conclusion drawn using proper Judicial process. You of all people will understand this. I just get very annoyed, particularly after reading the post on mechanical reporting, which I started a few years ago, when what you constantly read is subjective comment not objective comment and certainly in a lot of cases it isn't constructive. Some of you guys have a wealth of knowledge whilst others are just product bashers, the old Holden is better than Ford syndrome when it really comes down to simple semantics as to why one operates a Jabiru or 912. These people need to listen to the experts and if 2 are in agreement with each other pursue that avenue. Case in point, Nev and a very good friend of mine, who has serious qualifications, advised me to use 50ml of outboard motor 2 stroke oil, mineral if at all possible because it leaves a better residue than synthetic, to 20 litres of avgas and I'm now doing just that. Since commencing to use it there has been a marked improvement in my motor's operation. Hand turning before start up, no soft valves and good compression always. Compression in each cylinder is like new. Cooling is not effected and remains well within the ranges I achieved when I installed an oil cooler and air-scoop which also assists with no carby ice, as I don't have installed one of the usual carby heat systems. I was at that time having oil pressure problems because of having no oil cooler installed and the layered heat effect of the oil flowing through the system was effecting the viscosity of the oil at various junctures in the motor, it was thinning out and the pressure of course dropped. Now the heat is much more evenly distributed throughout. I installed the cooler on the advise of 2 experts one of which was an oil scientist, if one can call him that. I think that we all need to get with the program and stop making observations that are founded in no more than the process of thinking out loud.
  2. Anyone have the statistics on how many people have died in engine failures involving Rotax and Jabiru engines? Remember there is no question that's stupid it's only the answer that is. If you don't believe me have a look at most of the answers in these threads involving engine failures or the conclusion that everyone jumps to, oh it's a Jabiru that out landed that would be right, the engine would have failed. Think about it this thread has turned into a morbid product bashing vehicle, let the experts deal with the problem stop trying to impress all and sundry with ones knowledge as there are only a couple who use this medium who really do have any expertise in these matters. I act on fact and circumstance only not supposition and hearsay and any discussion based on that which appears in the newspaper I say is nothing more than hearsay. That's my 2 bob's worth and if you don't know what a bob is go and ask someone over the age of 60. And I don't apologize to anyone for my comments.
  3. Jabiru engines now there's something that's worth talking about, what a good idea lets start up a dedicated post and everyone can have their say!
  4. Hi Nev, Have been following your advice for some time now and some other knowledgeable persons and no regrets so far. As I have posted previously the outboard motor oil in the avgas has made a world of difference when you hand turn it over before firing it up. Compression always feels equal all round. I put in 50 mls of synthetic enhanced not full synthetic because too much oil is burnt off with little residue as you want some residue on the wall of the bores. Avigas on it's own is very drying on the wall of the bores hence a greater risk of corrosion. Also Nev before shutting down leave it idle for a minute to get rid of any moisture. Thanks for all your help. Rick-p
  5. David I think that you need to check the records on reliability of old engines Gypsy Major case in point Mark 1 2 & 10 probably one of the most reliable series of engines ever built, more reliable than either Jab or 912's they very, very, very rarely broke.
  6. Hey Nev maybe they removed it before anyone arrived on the scene so that they could disguise the motor because it really was a 912 and they never give up
  7. Fixed it all a long time ago by installing oil cooler and second instrument gauge (mechanical), all is good now, both pressure and temps. Also as advised by someone very knowledgeable, on this site and an engineering friend I have been adding 50mls of top shelf outboard motor 2 stroke oil to 20 litres of avgas, it has made one hell of a difference to all readings in respect of the engine operating specifications. For example all cylinder compression readings are now equal at 155lb. Turning it over by hand first before starting now has the correct feel. All is good. Thanks.
  8. And a lonely dog follows the highway of life with it's tail in the air and it's nose to the ground, PLEASEEEEEEEEE PEOPLE!
  9. I'm not knocking the pilot only the story as reported. Do the math, 300 metres height 350 metres from the aerodrome best glide velocity, it doesn't gel. Once again great reporting
  10. OMG it wouldn't be a Rotax would it, they don't stop!
  11. He is recovering and moving around now, he is much better. He is licenced, trained and the gyro is registered. The setting sun was hidden on the horizon and broke out from behind cloud and blinded him on take off, power lines got in the road, unfortunate but always around the corner to bite us if not completely situational aware.
  12. I'm leaving this thread is just too much
  13. So true, it amazes me, the reporter couldn't even get the pilot's years of flying experience right. In one breath it was 38yrs and then the next 35yrs. They had taken off 15 minutes earlier, great rate of climb over tiger country and were at 1500ft with 90 secs to react, 1,000ft a minute rate of sink, must have been side slipping! But they had time to read a map change their mind on a landing site, make a cup of coffee have a toasted sandwich and watch 60 minutes. I'm not saying these guys didn't face a big problem and enter the change of undies zone but come on it really is, more likely on the part of the reporter, because I don't like news paper reporters , a lot of poetic licence taken.
  14. From that which I have read very recently and further, that which I have been privy to very recently, the registration issue was just a storm in a tea cup compared to that which is coming. Wrongly or rightly there is a very big problem with the organisation which may just call for the appointment of an administrator or even worse. Make the call and ask the questions yourselves. That's all I'm prepared to say here and I will not refer to it again or discuss it again.
  15. No they appoint people to do the job of safety officer and then pull the rug out from under him which in turn pulls the rug out from under all of us so we won't have to worry too much longer because big brother will be taking us over, more likely than not and there will be no more accidents in their name because there will be no more planes flying under their banner. If you don't believe this call Canberra.
  16. The accident must have happened as we passed overhead on descent at about 1,500 feet to my strip some 3 miles south of the crash site, It happened coming up to last light but there was still good visibility at the time. I understand that it struck power lines and the pilot depending on which one of 2 was flying it was I believe a member of our club. Not long after we landed some 20 minutes or so blue flashing lights were seen in that direction and later an ambulance went up the road towards the crash site. The pilot was later flown out to Rocky because his injuries were to serious to be treated here in the local hospital. Nothing at this time is really clear as to what actually happened basically, all is as usual, just speculation. He was still critical this morning but haven't heard anymore since. Regardless of the ins and outs of it all, we just hope that he pulls through.
  17. Nev, have been using 50mls outboard 2 stroke per 50 litres of avgas and at about 300hrs still 150 even on each cylinder, thanks for the good advice.
  18. It was a Blanik, wasn't it? Great to see young people taking to the sky, Too many of us old farts around!
  19. Who cares he at least announced his presence and he did check out the runway, he landed didn't he. If you ever get or confused or whatever get on the radio give it your best shot and fly the plane with your head out of your butt and looking outside every which way. I would rather know of your existence early rather than not having had the opportunity to locate and avoid you. Rick-p
  20. Thanks Nev, he has been back instructing for a while now. It hasn't slowed him down at 65yrs young.
  21. If any of you Auster owners out there are after Mag's or Gypsy 1 engine parts send me a private message I have a few spares to unload!
  22. Hi Nev, a few years ago I owned a Supa Pup, one of the originals, it had a 447 motor. I had basically rebuilt the aeroplane after purchasing it from a cousin for $4,000. I was getting it ready to test run, sitting in the driver's seat, had the pull start handle in my hand, called clear prop after checking all around the area and yanked the thing, the prop went around and let out a loud yelp. Thank god it didn't start as my long time mate, my old dog had some how worked his way down to the airstrip and laid down under the prop. He must have stuck his head up when I called clear prop and got belted in the head with the prop. Luckily he wasn't hurt. I have no idea how he got there, to the planelocked and then under the plane without me seeing him. Maybe it was because I wasn't expecting him because I had left him closed in, in his run back at the house a good mile away. You can never be too observant. It would have been all over red rover for him if the motor had fired up.
