  1. This weeks New Scientist had an article on emissions from shipping and discussed wind assistance, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%.
  2. Quite right! The Goodall write up says: The Riviera promptly made its public debut at an air show at Pelican airfield near Newcastle NSW on 6 September. A blow came on 22 September during certification performance testflying at Bankstown when a heavy landing damaged the undercarriage and required checks for structural damage. The DCA accident report stated "During performance tests at maximum weight, the aircraft sank quickly when power was reduced for round-out and struck the ground heavily, collapsing the undercarriage." The report noted that the pilot, Bob Shute, had 137 hours experience on the aircraft type. VH-SAV went into the Piper hangar for repairs over the next three months, being test flown on 23 December 1964.
  3. VH-SAV was the only one in Australia. See https://www.goodall.com.au/australian-aviation/narratives/siairiviera.pdf
  4. It has taken 50 years to develop a natural gas network here in Victoria. The electric car myth depends on increasing global mining rates sixfold to produce the required minerals. That just isn’t going to happen. Even if technically possible, which it isn’t, the green movement will not accept new big mines in areas that haven’t had mining before. The rare earths are in very low concentrations in rocks, so the tailings dams will be massive and probably toxic. It is a fantasy.
  5. The only solution is to phase in changes over the next 50 years or so. That is what is going to happen, the faster timetables are just political posturing.
  6. Due to the short stroke, Rotax average piston speed is similar to Lyc/Con. Wear in bore etc should be similar.
  7. Why do they call him a pilot? Would they put it in the heading if he was an accountant, or an IT specialist?
  8. They say he is stalling and they are waiting for him to roll over.
  9. Here are some more pics from the day, Nov 20 2021. Lots more pics on the Unusual Attitudes facebook page.
  10. Lake Eppalock near Bendigo, a private field.
  11. What a great day we had at the Unusual Attitudes airpark fly-in at Eppalock yesterday! 51 aircraft on the field and lots of socialising.
  12. "We've got three grades of petrol, BP saves you money, three grades of petrol, all the power you need..." Remember the jingle?
  13. SE 2410/2415 Grognard. You would want the engine off before climbing out of teh cockpit in an emergency!
  14. Ian I have been waiting for someone else to ask what baroque means in this context. Now I have asked!
  15. A Cessna 150 on the new RAA weight limit may be the best value for the next few years, if the stall speed will allow.
  16. The report. http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2021/aair/ao-2021-032/
  17. GA is much more relaxed than when I began. We had to lodge flight plans for other than local flights, maintain contact with Flight Services and carry HF in remote areas. The changes are all possible because of technology, but CASA etc have allowed them.
  18. I think the laugh was on the reporter who said ailerons instead of elevators.
  19. I watched that show in black and white when I was an early teenager. Fancied the girl in the tight shorts.
  20. My weekend flying has changed since Shepparton and Bendigo introduced landing fees. I used to go there regularly but don't now. The fees are not a big deal compared to the cost of running an aircraft, but they tell me I am not welcome. My passengers and I can go elsewhere and buy lunch.
