  1. I have long held a fascination for Wainfan's Facetmobile. Especially his concept for simple, cheap construction. Yes, IF I had the money, and it was available, I'd buy one. But my eccentricity is not a good market indicator. The only hope for a marketable "different" flying machine would be to do what Wainfan originally did. He built a prototype and flew it to Oshkosh, and won awards there. Instant publicity.
  2. But therein lies the problem. What chance is there to identify the operator, and to prove in court that he was operating the thing at the time? It's rather unlikely that any witness will come forward to incriminate him/her.
  3. Last night there was a doco segment on tv about drone pilot licencing. It highlighted the CASA regulator and the importance of operating within the rules. Then it showed a professional drone operator flying a large drone over a bunch of people. Does that fit within the rules? Is that a good role model to show the thousands of little (hobby size) drone operators? Or silly politicians?
  4. Lucky? Maybe those good luck coins the little old lady threw into the engine worked.
  5. Thanks, Col. I've never seen it put so succinctly.
  6. Thanks for the link Desky. Interesting stuff, but it's still got a long way to go before I'll be trying this sort of flying. It shows that contrary to the beliefs of some cynical posters, the spirit of adventure (and experimentation) is alive and well.
  7. I'm still confused by the thread title. "Manned Drone Flies" ? I've heard of drone bees. And we've got lotsa flies out west. But I've never heard of Drone Flies.
  8. After reading that link, and others, I am possessed of a growing sense of gloom. I can only hope that the previous rate of turnover continues and offers us another option, from the lucky dip bag of bureaucrats.
  9. I think they are doing the best they can within the very limited scope permitted under the law. If you don't like the law, (By the way I don't), write to your local member and ask them to change it.
  10. Years ago I found a priceless book titled "The Asian Mind Game". It was written by a lady of eastern origin (I believe nobody wants to be called 'Asian'). Her job was consultant to (mostly American) businesses, to guide them through the cultural challenge of doing business with each of the various eastern nations, without bankruptcy or nervous breakdown. If you can stumble across a copy, grab it. Very enlightening. It explains all of the points made in this thread.
  11. You don't get much more north than where you are, Haydn. There's less tiger country up your way. Marty and I are south of HBA. Still good to have another Tasmanian on board. Welcome.
  12. If we get enough southsiders maybe we can set up a nice airfield one day........
  13. G'day Hayden. Welcome to the forum. In what part of Tassie are you based? Are you flying? If so, where. There are not a lot of airfields to choose from. But lots of nice scenery.
  14. If you really want to know, ask Flying Dog !
  15. Nah, it's not about the hat....... Emu's can't help being the ugliest things on the planet..... I can understand Farcebook rejecting them..... But I don't understand why Ian lets an Emu on his forum.... It's a FLYING forum !
  16. You're running out of room to walk (work) around your project. It's outgrown it's space! Looking more like an aircraft every time we see it. Well done.
  17. Hi Marty , how is the build progressing?

Not bad Peter. I haven't updated the build log in a while but I have been busy. Hoping to post some new pics shortly. Unfortunately life gets in the way - converting the laundry to a pantry at the moment so construction tends to keep me busy.

  19. We haven't heard an update from Frank for a while. Hope he came through the storm without damage or loss. This is probably a good time to point out that we can't count on mobile phones or internet when storms hit, if power fails. The pressure of competition has led to most service providers cutting back on battery backup capacity. And on peak call capacity. At best you can expect phones to go down after an hour or so (And congestion until then). Those people who still have a copper connected landline should be ok though as most telephone exchanges still have big batteries and standby gensets. I keep a pair of hand held uhf cb' and and know what channels our local emergency crews use.
  20. There's still one or two nutcases that haven't yet been lured to the New website.......... Now what can I say that they couldn't resist falling for?
  21. Sad but true.......... We love flying We love Aircraft But there are large slices of our time where we cannot indulge in matters aviation, for some reason. Then we vent our frustrations by stirring the crup out of each other About those eternally valuable topics such as religion, sex and politics (and maybe our car/footy preferences) My point is, sadly, we have more time for BS than aviation
  22. Final update: Thanks to Doug for supplying me photos of his GA oil tank setup. I copied his as I believe that all GA912's after mine were made that way. I installed a ROTAX s.s. Oil tank. Deleted the external dip stick tube and blanked off the hole in the fire wall. I cut out a inspection hatch directly above the oil tank to allow access to the inbuilt dip stick. Not sure, but maybe my Aircraft (#90) was Howie's first factory built GA and they hadn't figured out how to set up the oil tank? Anyway, problem solved.
  23. Inland - about 300 klm
