  1. Totally baffled! Channel 9 news saying aircraft is carbon fibre which is as dangerous as asbestos??? That’s question one! Thorp T18, if it was that is sheet aluminium, Thruster, I thought anyway is tube and fabric??? Enlighten me anyone?
  2. So much for the Worldwide shortage of commercial pilots!
  3. I believe that the 25hr oil and filter change is super important, the engine oil quantity is not a lot and the filter is fairly small. My opinion only, I have no figures to back it up.
  4. My view! If properly maintained iaw Jabiru manual, it is as good as any. It is a lightweight, simple, relatively low cost engine and there is , I feel, an awful lot of the typical Australian ‘tall poppy’ syndrome around it. My airframe is Zenith with a Jabiru engine, but at Warwick where I fly there are about half a dozen properly maintained Jabirus whose owners are happy plus a low wing Zenith with a six cylinder Jabiru. I really don’t know what it is with a lot of Australians but they seem to think foreign is better!
  5. I have a 2200 in my CH701. If anything it runs slightly cool on CHT and EGT whilst Oil sits around 90 except for an extended climb when I have only once seen it over 100. I am curious that the manual says it can go to 118 max but doesn’t say for how long that is permissible, so I never let it get anywhere close to that.
  6. I have a 2200 Jab in my Zenith CH701 so I have joined the group.
  7. I’ve also seen the leading edge flattened back to the spar on a Tomahawk and a Warrior flying night circuits and hit flying foxes!
  8. A lot of dedicated aerobatic aeroplanes in the UK have a steel cable around the engine from one firewall engine mount bolt to the diagonally opposite one for the purpose of maintaining tolerable CofG should the engine break free.
  9. If it was midweek and they made it to Mittagong they probably would have had to climb the fence to get out!!!
  10. I have the Jabiru composite prop on my Jab 2200 engined Zenith CH701. It was pitched by Jabiru to suit the airframe. I see 3010 static rpm and about 2960 on climb out at 50 kts. I am quite happy with the set up.
  11. It can be done! Look on YouTube, B52 gets into a very steep bank and fairly literally disappears!
  12. I take issue with the statement about nosewheels. By far the majority of pilots in my lifetime would have trained on C150/152, C172, PA38 and PA28, all nosewheel aircraft!
  13. Just because it doesn’t have separate Bendix or Slick magnetos doesn’t mean it has none. The Jabiru system would commonly be referred to as ‘flywheel magnetos’ used to be common on motorcycle engines eg. Villiers and are still common on lawn mower engines eg. Briggs and Stratton. So maybe you need to look a bit harder or do some more reading! Nev, what say you on this???
  14. When it loses rpm is it still running smoothly? I would tend to think a plug wasn’t firing, or a lead is faulty, however if it is still smooth I’d be checking the gap between mag and flywheel. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago and ended up changing the distributor cap, the spring loaded carbon contact in the centre of the cap was not making proper contact. Also changed the relevant set of plug leads. Checked and set the gap between coil and flywheel. All been good since.
  15. Ah well, at least the media got it right, it actually was a Cessna this time!
  16. I could be totally wrong here, but I thought their fleet was all Gippsland Airvans?
  17. Where are you based. I am in Warwick and have a heap of 1/8 and 5/32 clecos and a pair of pliers that I probably don’t need anymore. No 3/32 though!
  18. My view on this is simplistic. A hotel room is always going to be cheaper than a funeral!
  19. A friend of mine, Phil Pierce, flies from Dunkeswell. I, in a previous existence before moving downunder lived within sight of White Waltham, but flew from Booker.
  20. It can happen to the best, even when trying their best. I can’t quote dates, but a lot of years ago a BOAC/BA crew managed to make a fuel tank selection which at the time was legitimate, but shut down all four engines in a VC10.
  21. I (we) have flown Ryanair a couple of times down to Dordogne when holidaying in the UK. I actually don’t mind them and personally rate them higher than Jetstar. Yes it is like an airborne shop but you don’t have to buy anything. I don’t like that you can pay extra to jump the queue, but they do that at the London Eye also. Interesting that they had us lined up to board before the plane had even arrived. Also amusing is the trumpet fanfare and announcement “ Another on time arrival by Ryanair” which I figure must activate together with the thrust reverser and sounds even if it is late!!!!
  22. No, Skyview has a back-up battery and I’m reasonably sure I can get down without it. Always have google maps, altitude might be a problem but not too much outside controlled airspace.
  23. Ten inch Skyview with dual radios in my CH701. Just working on the KISS principle!
  24. Absolutely gives me the chills when I see people leaning on the propellor for a photograph, particularly when it is a hot engine and the pilot has just doe his first solo or just gained his licence or whatever!
