  1. The plugs should give some idea of how rich or lean an engine is running. Even better is EGT gauges if they are fitted.
  2. Yes VNe is based on one deflection at a time and is no guarantee that the airframe will stand up to two deflections. A Cessna might I think because very little seems to happen with full deflection of a control for a short time, whereas some of our lighter recreational and also high performance planes deflect immediately.
  3. I would not attempt a reversal turn with engine failure at my home strip. There are paddocks with wire fences ahead of me, but if I achieve the 180 deg turn I then have to contend with a downwind landing on a downslope. Even landing with a head wind that downslope often extends the float distance.
  4. Lock nuts are used on the aileron hinges of RVs, there was a problem with them not being done up tight, which allowed slight movement of the threaded part of the hinge to flex the aluminium, resulting in crack in the aluminium. It is easy when building to leave nuts loose, because you are doing a trial fit and then leaving it all as is, resulting on problems. No matter how careful you are when building these things can happen, even with double checking.
  5. Vic is a regular contributor to "Kitplanes" You could pay for Kitplanes on line and have access to all his contributions there. They may well cover all that is in his books, but I haven't seen the books.
  6. I just got a card to say I have a parcel at the PO. IT will be ink toner which easily fits into my 20 litre drum post box and usually parcels are left there. I suppose we have a new deliverer.
  7. My Davis fuel drain is at the bottom of the fuselage and fuel comes from the tank via a tap to the drain. That was used for two reasons. 1 The fuel line from the tank to the drain goes between the pilots legs, so a tap makes it safer. 2 The davis drains are known to leak so tap prevents the tank from being drained during flight. The only problem is that I have to remember to turn on and off, which is not very onerous. The drain obviously will not pass fuel until the tap is on and the tap is adjacent to the main tap, so obvious when I start up.
  8. I used to regard the VSI as being irrelevent and hardly ever looked at it. When I did instrument flying training way back in the seventies I was not very good at it. A few years ago probably 2018 I did a flight review for GA and the instructor said we would do instrument flying. I told him of my disregard of the VSI and he said that an old Hurricane pilot had told him that the ASI was the most important instrument, because it gave an instantaneous indication of level change. I did about an hour on instruments, making use of the VSI and while I was sweating a bit I managed to maintain control through turns, climbs and descents to specific headings and altitudes. THat instrument I mentioned above is not only a VSI it has attitude and other things as well.
  9. I have found that to get a small parcel delivered to me by Aus. Post it needs to be express post, otherwise it never arrives. Express post from Bundaberg to me near Gladstone takes about 4 days. Australia post may be crook, but I have found that the alternatives are just as bad. Stuff bought on E Bay doasn't get delivered because they won't deliver past 2km along our road. Even things which the provider says he has an agreement with the deliverer don't get here. I have to get them sent to a friend a bit nearer town.
  10. I read about this yesterday and it looks good. It was only a few mm in depth, 8mm from memory. Rather like the smallest Dynon on offer, but I think it was quooted as US$399, which looked like good value to me. Not as good as the Dynon, but much easier on the wallet.
  11. I found while I built and flew 2 aircraft that buying in Australia resulted in prices about double and delivery times slower than buying from Aircraft Spruce in the US/ When CASA decreed that control cable ends had to be replaced I priced in Aus. and USA. USA was one third the price with quicker delivery.
  12. It doesn't sound so bad when you say $1630 per annum. I bet that is less than a serious golfer pays out for his sport.
  13. Keep the C of G in its acceptable range and you should have enough elevator authority.
  14. I am always surprised at how little of that kind of thing goes on at an Old Station fly in. I have had many people ask if they can see in or get in my planes there. There seems to be something about how the planes are parked and all the people milling around that makes parents and gawpers easier to handle.
  15. According to CASA the mayday fuel idea is an ICAO thing. When they brought it in I thought how stupid it was.
  16. Full throttle and it comes clear. Stand by for a quick acceleration, probably off the taxiway in the other direction.
  17. If you spray a jet of water over an electric fence so that it hits the ground and then lower the jet, you will get a kick. I thought that it would earth to ground rather than travel back to your hands on the wet hose, but was wrong.
  18. There is not only the weight of the plane to consider, but also there is a suction on the bogged wheels.
  19. I don't think RAAus collating and working out what happened would work, that is going on it's past performance. I reckon they would stuff up the info and we would have even less of a chance of learning anything.
  20. We pay the landowner $300pa for his insurance. Also pay the group who run the strip $10 per month to cover fuel etc for the mowing and maintenance. Good value. We own the hangars and so far they change hands and only one was demolished when the owner departed.
  21. Wherever you have choppers you also have chopper pilots and my opinion of them is that they act as if the rules don't apply to them. They have absolutely no regard for the safety of others. Having said that, there are a few good ones.
  22. The other aircraft mentioned here are mainly built by an aircraft company. Vans is geared to the homebuilder and there record is very good. It will probably be good at everything it is designed for and nicer to fly than a Cessna, plus the builder can do whatever he wants with the build to get a personalised aircraft. Having built an RV I reckon it will probably be good value and good flying.
  23. I am no longer using Avplan and never did use OzRunways. Now I get a paper chart and work through it all the old way using an old computer, Not the electrical kind. It doesn't take long to jot down on paper. The I use a GPS12 as backup. Not that I do long flight nowadays.
  24. I thought a PLB or better was a requirement for all except a single seat plane and that is including RAAus planes. A PLB is good for a single seater too but not mandatory. Water is just about essential in all but mid winter conditiions.
  25. He was worth listening to, but sometimes he could be so pig headed that he couldn't believe the truth.
