ASIC renewal

Recommended Posts

I actually got asked for my ASIC at Toowoomba. A young lady who was escorting a fuel truck to fuel up the RFDS asked me for mine as I was walking from the gate back to my aircraft. Having had and used daily an MSIC since the day of there inception I was well aware of the rules of wearing or displaying your ASIC but in this case mine was in my pocket. When asked for my ASIC I said to the young lady if you had the authority to ask me for that then you would know that yours should be on display first. She promptly pulled hers out of her pocket as did I.I have no problem with ASIC being required at airports that have RPT. My problem is simply that I have an MSIC, it costs me $537.00 It used to be valid for 4 years, but is now only 2 years. Why then should I also need an ASIC. Why would one not suffice. We do after all go through the same AFP check to get them.

That's interesting Toowoomba hasn't been security controlled for some time now how long ago did you get asked. I fly into there every day and don't have it displayed even though I have one in my bag.

Guy's/girls it's time to get over this, these are the rules we have to play by in this sand pit if you don't like it go play somewhere else, it doesn't matter whether you like it or not it's not going to change anytime soon.

It was about 4 months ago. According to ERSA it is Security Controlled.

And isn't that a fantastic thing....I mean its common place in society to implement expensive change and then when someone asks can you prove that the expensive change brought society the expected benefits we all say....well...... nothing really cause we don't speak about such things...Medicine in the main relys on evidence based research, if you want to shove a pill down my neck you must jump through so many hoops showing it on balance is more beneficial than not.

If medicine used the proof around ASIC's we would still be relying on blood letting.....

It, like most things in life is about mitigating risk...from my unbalanced perception it seems that risk is little reduced yet the costs to a small subgroup of society is out of control......

I put it to you that I can probably do more damage in the car I drive to the airport than the plane I then use......yet no one is suggesting for a moment that car drivers need to undergo a security check, not because it would result in less of risk reduction than the aircraft case, but rather the whole of the voting country would be affected and to be blunt simply wouldn't allow it to happen! So in otherwords real risk reduction has been sidelined by political reality....I hate that and I hate even more that we as a group have no political capacity to call it for what it is and refuse to play (pay!)

Unlike the medical field, in security you want to prevent the research from people trying to find holes in the system, that's why they don't publicly tell you that Joe Blobbs was stopped smuggling packages because his ASIC application sparked interest. At the end of the day the cost of an ASIC isn't much more then an hours hire in a GA aircraft.

We should be focused on making the system easier, you already know where I've lived for the past 7 years can't I just tell you where I've lived since my last renewal :)

The cost of an ASIC may not be more than an hours hire of an aircraft, but I get no enjoyment out of aving an ASIC or renewing it,, but I can enjoy aircraft hire. there seems to me to be a growing number of people who think that soething doesn't cost much so we shouldn't question it, but all those little costs add up.

It seems ridiculous that Australians should have all these hoops to jump through, when the country that caused all the problems doesn't have anything like the Bull that we have to put up with.

What Australia needs is to get rid of all the petty beaurocrats who are killing this country. Not only in flying but in every walk of life.

A scary number of cars and drivers are unregistered and ininsured too.

Make things as simple and cheap as possible and people will comply, expensive and intrusive and greater efforts go into avoiding it

I don't like having to pay car registration either, but if I legally want to drive a car I must cough up the dough.

And if you want to fly an aeroplane you have a pilot licence/certificate.

It's not the money, honey, it's the principle.

I can drive a Heavy combination or a commercial marine craft up to 65 feet in length and I could do a lot more damage with either of those than in my 71 yo aircraft. But I don't need a security check for them.

I object to the inherent supposition that pilots as a class are less trustworthy than drivers of big trucks or big boats, just as I objected to the knee jerk reaction that saw the property of honest firearms owners confiscated by Mr Howard years ago.

Incidentally, homicides in Australia are up and the knife is now the weapon of choice. We lose one woman every week to Family Violence and we would save far more lives addressing that than the risk of a terrorist attack in a light aircraft.

Deal with the criminals and diminish their rights...not mine.

Perhaps we need a Husband/Male partner SIC (HMPSIC) card...that would be as effective at reducing that crime as the ASIC is in reducing the terrorist related one....the only sad difference is that the "King has no clothes" would be obvious to all within a week or two for the HMPSIC, and isn't that sad...all that effort to provide a solution in need of a problem for the ASIC........and not so much for the other.....

The fact you have to have a licence or certificate is not the issue. The issue is paying for a security clearance to fly into some, not all, airports in this country. Yes, no one disagrees that you have to pay for a licence or certificate. Robbo, your comments are insulting.

Your do if you wish to drive into some areas, or carry some types of loads. The same with the ASIC

I can use my heavy vehicle licence without a security clearance and drive through every city in Australia legally. I can't legally use my GA pilot licence at all without a current security clearance. It's not the same thing.

Political reality:-

Truck driver made to pay for and get and be regularly stuffed around with a TSIC suddenly decide that the ACT no longer needs any delivery's of toilet paper, or alcohol....... Shortly thereafter the politicians decided that discretion was the best part of valour......

Meanwhile in an aviation forum the pilots are all still bleating to each other ....while in the ACT the politicians are all enjoying all the puppy loving toilet breaks they feel they need before imbibing their next poison of choice..........

Off topic. I had a load of Weetbix on for Coles in ACT once. Was knackered so went to bed at Goulburn. Got a phone call asking where the hell I was at about 0400. My reply was that my life was far more important than little Johnny's bloody weetbix. Then turned my phone off and had another hour before rolling in.

I just applied to renew my ASIC. Did the ASIC get expensive or am I just getting old and forgetting what I paid last time?

what did you pay last time and this time and who were the vendors?

It's not just about what damage you could do in your C172, but also what access you may have to RPT aircraft.

Pilots are not the only ASIC holders, everyone who requires regular access to aviation facilities also gets one, including the teenager flipping burgers at the terminals McDonalds.

Why do you have to APPLY each time, nothing has changed, hopefully they still have all the details, if I'm a bad guy and I've been naughty am I going to tell them. Maybe they are just checking that I got my name right all those other times. Yes I may have changed address but send a printout and advise of any changes and attach cheque here.

Like Latrobe Valley which is also a Security Controlled ,according to ERSA ,with the usual 'security' measures such as 900 mm fence and push button 900mm gate ( always left ajar ) with the usual ctaf code if anybody ever bothers to shut it . The occasional RPT flight ceased many years ago when Rex pulled out . The system's a joke ...... Bob

This topic has been going on for years but it all comes down to the rules.

If you wan't to fly you must have a ASIC or AVID no matter how you look at it.

I don't think it will change anytime soon so just move on and pay for your ASIC or AVID and enjoy this wonderful thing called flight.
