  1. My favourite aircraft ever....I have yet to see one in the flesh though.
  2. The F4U Corsair was designed around a P&W R2800 matched to a 13' 4" prop. The cut and paste from wiki explains what pretty much every doco I've read or seen says about why they have the inverted gull wing. Consider also that it was designed from the start to be a carrier based fighter and needed solid landing gear. To accommodate a folding wing the designers considered retracting the main landing gear rearward but, for the chord of wing that was chosen, it was difficult to make the landing gear struts long enough to provide ground clearance for the large propeller. Their solution was an inverted gull wing, which considerably shortened the required length of the struts.[24] The anhedral of the wing's center-section also permitted the wing and fuselage to meet at the optimum angle for minimizing drag, without using wing root fairings.[24] The bent wing, however, was heavier and more difficult to construct, offsetting these benefits.
  3. At what point would it become relevant? At $20k you’ve exceeded the value of the aircraft in 4-5 years, and the materials to build the airframe would be around the cost of a year's worth.
  4. Don’t forget to make you can still get your oil filter off and on again with regard to the front left pipe. Mine has a bend that seemS to be for no reason until you pull the oil filter.
  5. Would you do the same if your aircraft was worth $20k, and you built it?
  6. 12 kg is the whole prop, you can subtract the weight of the fixed prop to get the difference. Having flown with one, I think the performance gains are certainly worth the weight.
  7. Turn the prop around and reverse the motor to use the existing prop.
  8. The Ultra EFIS I have has a VOR but is based on GPS and doesn’t use radio signals The good bit about that is that you can load your own points of interest and still navigate to them using VOR as if they had their own station.
  9. This used to be on the back of the main door at 482 SQN Field Training Flight at Amberley in the eighties. It has stuck with me all those years.
  10. I have had some experience with the Airmaster on a friend’s aircraft. It’s simple to operate, very effective and adds considerably to the performance. I’d love one, but I can’t justify the price.
  11. It was a once in a lifetime experience, but I was a little disappointed when instead of getting the wild American exchange pilot (no names mentioned) one of the most sedate ones walked in and asked "who's next", then on climbout at about Purga the cowl light came on. After a short radio call the flight was permitted to proceed but not exceeding 450kts, VFR and no aeros. I got a short time on the controls with the cloud base down to Cunninghams gap and not a lot of room to move. Some of the earlier flights actually got to go on engine test flights where they stretch their legs a bit.
  12. On the original topic, I snapped a screenshot climbing out of Moree with the GPS showing 366 kts groundspeed in a Zenith 601while the GPS was catching up, I have had a genuine 150 kts grounds speed with a 48kt tailwind out near Dalby. I did get a lap in an F111 once, but due to a translating cowl warning light we weren't allowed to exceed 450 kts.
  13. That speed on a VF would be nerve wracking....I had a VF750 for a while and I consider it the worst bike I've ever owned. The handling was atrocious. The Hayabusa is a different story. 240kph is cruising on it. It does take a little while to adjust mentally to those speeds though.
  14. If you are doing it for the fun of it you don't need to prove anything, just enjoy doing it. Just because someone doesn't think the idea is practical doesn't mean it should stop others from doing it.
  15. As Rec flyers we don't actually need to do anything, so as long as it's for recreation why not open the door for some innovation and experimentation for the fun of it?
  16. It's a bit more complicated than that, but not much. I want something similar to the military system I'm used to using. I want to be able to load serial numbers of my few maintenance managed items and have them tracked and alert me for both hours and date based maintenance. For example engine 5yr rubber replacements is date based, as are ASI and altimeter cal and 50 hrs for oil and filter changes. Extra items also come up for 100 hourly. I want to be able to raise unserviceabilities and sign them off, and record daily inspections (or before flight servicings for the military term) as well as fuel and oil replenishments. Most importantly , I want it to be standalone, no cloud based or subscription stuff.
  17. I looked at Breezylog when I was at Avalon. I was interested in a decent computer based maintenance scheduling and recording system, but I want a standalone system that I own and I don't want cloud based storage. I have looked at several apps for machinery maintenance management but I can't seem to find anything that fits just right. Surely there has to be something out there.
  18. Is the third party the same third party that does the maintenance courses?
  19. I can assure you that no matter how distracting a female passenger is normally, they will be many times worse if they're cold and want a toilet. I say this as a Drifter pilot with a partner.
  20. The word "funny" in the title was the giveaway. It's for amusement, not learning radio coms.
  21. Where I work both of these things are expected and done. If there are situations where social distancing is impossible then they will enforce the use of PPE. They have made it clear that if one person on one shift tests positive then that whole shift will be quarantined. They have a three hour window between shifts and the workplace and tools are disinfected at the beginning and end of each shift. Tradies are not allowed physical contact with office workers and vice versa. They have taken it very seriously.
  22. The employers are already supposed to be keeping employees apart and disinfecting regularly. If they were following the correct processes the app would be redundant anyway.
  23. Will you be leaving the airport? Why not contact the relevant authorities for accurate details. Specific processes apply for those entering through airports, who will be required to provide certain information including: • Personal and contact details • The address where they intend to stay in Queensland • Information about where they have travelled in the last 30 days If a person is entering Queensland from another State or Territory by air in order to transfer to another flight they are allowed to enter Queensland, but must remain in the airport until the time of a transfer to another flight, or self-quarantine in a hotel until the other flight.
  24. Exactly....These people want special rules and punishments if they are assaulted in any way, so these people must be squeaky clean and beyond reproach and if they are found not to be then they should be immediately dismissed as unworthy of that position, but that doesn't happen.
