  1. Flying with a group has many benefits, but at the same time can place undue stress on some of the participants, such as when the group decides to continue on ,where one individual may consider it unwise. This uneasy feeling on a person, already not feeling well, may cause that person to make poor judgements, in relation to the decisions pilots have to make ,particularly when flying in less than ideal conditions . If you do not feel 100% then best stay on the ground .... Bob

  6. I think this document, ( the attach.) , as submitted by Jaba- who makes for easier reading , and maybe less confusion than the one by Skidmore ....Bob Hello Jabiru Fleet, Update on CASA limitations We have been notified that CASA will be replacing the instrument that expires on the 30th of June with an instrument that places no limitations on Jabiru powered aircraft compliant with maintenance procedures, Service Bulletins and Letters and with no modifications. It is heartening to see recognition by CASA of the issues faced which are beyond our control and the steps taken by Jabiru to deal with the issues within our control. It has also been heartening to see the dramatic increase in compliance to Service Bulletins/Letters and maintenance procedures. This combined with our Jabiru engine training workshops has resulted in fewer incidents and puts us well ahead of Rotax for reliability, the standard by which CASA based their aggressive initial actions. It is disappointing however that CASA have still retained an Acceptance of Risk Statement within the limitations for non-compliant aircraft as the signing of this provides no enhancement to the reliability of these engines and is still damaging to our business. We will continue to work for and with our owners and operators to strengthen and grow the Jabiru Fleet. We have weathered the storm - it is now onwards and upwards for the Jabiru Fleet. 7. Don't work on your plane while anyone is talking to you, also. Nev Couldn't agree more ..... Bob
  8. The problem with Jabs in particular is their small sump capacity ( 2.3 lts for 4 cyl.) and the time required for the oil to drain back . A refuelling stop generally doesn't allow sufficient time, consequently the dipstick reading may give a wrong indication . Get to know your cruise oil consumption ( eg 50 mls/hr ) , and multiply by hours flown , seems to work for me. Check the oil catch bottle frequently and empty before it gets too full to avoid the oily film on the underside of the fuselage . I do tend to run slightly higher levels than recommended which shows up in the bottle, but this gives me some 'comfort' on those longer legs . No other downsides , oil temps etc., detected ...... Bob
  9. It's a long haul to become a safe and competent pilot, requiring a considerable knowledge base ( have a look at the highly regarded John Brandon's Tutorials on this site ) . Even with 30 or so hours up and a freshly minted Pilot Certificate, resist the temptation to become over-confident, which often occurs with new pilots . You will probably have a passenger endorsement by then and anxious to share your accomplishment with others, but it may be better to consolidate your training ,without the additional passenger responsibility in the event that something out of the ordinary occurs , as it often does . And don't forget. .... " a good pilot is always learning " ..... Bob
  10. You're doing fine mate , just listen to your instructor ,which you appear to be doing, and it will all fall into place . He comes across as a capable instructor . Really a case of information overload at this stage, which happens to most people . Even high hour pilots make errors during their BFR, due to the presence of the instructor . You will be more relaxed when solo, so hang in there ..... Bob
  11. Yeah I was a bit intrigued also. Thought it may have been for chopping wood to light fires for smoke signals in case the PLB failed etc. but , on reflection I think you're on the money Bill..... Bob

  16. Hmm Frank , that first pic shows how narrow that valley really is . I never quite saw it like that , maybe I was too preoccupied with the High Voltage power lines , dark shadows on the banks of the Mulgrave and wondering if I would get the rather heavy Jab down on this little grass strip in one piece ...... 21. This accident bears a striking resemblance to the Piper Sport accident that killed an RAAus instructor and his student on 19/3/2012 , some 14 miles NW of Bundaberg . Doing stall recovery at the time and appeared to get into a flat spin , pancaking into cane field with little or no horizontal flight component . Unfortunately the Qld Coroner exercised his right to limit access of his/her findings to family members ..... Bob
