Class 5 medical declaration. My experience

Really? You need to be running an AOC to apply for a Class 5 Medical?

If you had been involved with casa in such a capacity then you would know what a bunch of bastards they are to deal with. They condone some companies flagrant misuse/abuse and obvious disregard of regulations and rules while pedantically persecuting others. Why are you such a casa sycophant? Smacks of self interest or trolling?

CASA are bastards?

I'm a  sycophant?

Funny how you can't tell us exactly what your problem is.

Even those who work there in high positions ATO's etc.KNOW how bad things are done and people sent broke out of personal attitudes.   One victim had the temerity to take them to court and when he beat them they handed him 2 more charges as he left . All you do is label me as CASA hater and YOU just wouldn't KNOW. I DO know because i've had the Involvement with them and with people on AOC's  AIR Operator Certificates. IF you looked hard enough you'd change your view but you won't do that. We all want an improvement for the sake of everybody in the Industry. Accepting the status quo won't get us anywhere.. I'd be one of the first to acknowledge progress WHEN it happens.  I also know what it used to be like.. Newcastle RNAC had a good relationship with the THEN DCA. The DG  used to present our  Pilot awards and shake every award receiver's hand. DCA knew wat was going on and communicated with us Many ex Newcastle people worked there. Nev

Well OK,  That's two pilots.

It just happens that I posted the researched statistics on another thread today and there are:

 6,300 RA pilots

10,804 RPL/PPL

-----------------

17,104 total

So 17,102 left to go.

Ask most of them who have had much to do with casa and they will tell you what bastards they are.....

I was talking to a friend yesterday who applied for her Class 5 recently and also got a notice to contact a Dame. Her Class 5 appeared on the screen but she couldn’t print it. She emailed CASA and they didn’t have an explanation but cancelled her application, refunded her $10 and told her to try again. On the other hand about 8 club members have got theirs previously without any problems so this IT issue seems to be a recent problem.

Hi RGMWA

sorry to hear about the inconvenience to your friend, but glad I’m not the only one afflicted. The irony is the Class 5 declaration was meant to streamline the process but I have spent three or four hours already trying to get one- and am still no nearer than when I started.

This  is just an IT bug, CASA  public facing staff have been helpful, but I wish I’d just gone with my usual Class 2 basic now.

Note to CASA (and all operators of automated public services). Please test the system thoroughly before launching!

How on earth a Class 5 Declaration can result in direction to a DAME for a medical examination is completely beyond me! Class  5 and Class 1-2 should be on totally different systems. How did they become mixed up?

Another automated system that gives endless trouble is that annual flight movements survey conducted by the department. I always have to send my data just as an email…. Sometimes they tell you to do that explicitly because the system is ‘down’ (yet again).

But glad to read the system is working for many people. Gives me hope

Remember that lines of code can't think. If the coding was "if A,B,C,D,E etc are met issue Class 5 or default to DAME"  then if there's a coding mistake for C, the system will default and send you to a DAME. probably something very simple in the coding which has to be fixed.

Given that a lot of people haven’t had any problems they have probably been fiddling with the code recently and broken it. Maybe they thought it was working too well, or perhaps they have reached their quota of Class 5’s. for the year. I hope they fix it soon.

Remember the old computer operation basics - GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out. And the supplier of the computer system was also the lowest tenderer, thus guaranteeing a lot of shortcuts.

  • 1 month later...

Does everyone, or even ANYONE, know how Class 5 even exists - given that it does not appear in the regulations and probably won't for another three years?

CASA Exemption 01/24 Flight crew medical status (class 5 Medical Self-declaration) Exemption 2024.

Does CASA medical TELL YOU about this when you get your Class 5? (No.)

How are you supposed to know about and find it? I knew it would exist, and I knew how to find it. Joe/Josepine Average? - not a hope in hell.

The exemption has the usual conditions you would normally see on your class 2 - requirements to wear glasses and have a spare pair within reach etc.

There’s a few conditions on the exemption that make interesting reading. Like, if you are carrying a passenger, you not only have to tell them that you’re on a class 5 medical, but also show them the paperwork and (if I read it right) carry the list of conditions in the aircraft with you. If you don’t have a passenger, then you only have to carry the printout of the medical, not all the conditions. Strange…

I found the class 5 quick and easy to do. Took about half an hour. I rang casa with a couple of questions and the bloke I spoke to was very helpful.

That's the only experience I have had with them.

I believe these are the requirements to carry and disclose your class 5 medical.

CASA EX01/24 — Flight Crew Medical Status (Class 5 Medical Selfdeclaration) Exemption 2024

Part 32

32 Conditions — record of class 5 medical self-declaration must be carried on aircraft and produced for inspection

 (1) A person who holds a private pilot licence or recreational pilot licence must not commence exercising the privileges of their licence in a single-pilot operation in an aircraft unless they are carrying a copy of their record of class 5 medical selfdeclaration on the aircraft.

 (2) A person who holds a private pilot licence or recreational pilot licence must, on request of an authorised person, produce their record of class 5 medical selfdeclaration for inspection by the person.

Yes, you’re right. I was looking at a draft (easier to find) which included some extra conditions like the ones I described. Thankfully, they’ve been removed from the final document.

Let my class 1 expire as I didn’t require it anymore, did the class 5 which was seamless, emailed it the RAAUS for them to update my records, just received an email from them, RAAUS are unable to accept CASA class 5 medical certificates at this time as the Ops Manual has not been updated, work in progress.

Yep they told me that too...so I had to get my usual heavy vehicle drivers licence done last month and send the medical on that to them like before. I just find it stupid that you can use a Class 2 med with RAAA and not the new Class 5...one would think it SHOULD be seamless

Ok, dumb question time. If all you need for RAA is self declaration that you meet a car license standard, then why do you need to tell them about CASA medicals?

....because these newer iterations are based on your self declarations (you carry the liability) whereas the CASA medicals are based on CASA appointed Doctors (where CASA has the liability for approving you). If you have a crash and there were some issues you didn't declare, and someone is injured - that's when it's not so good.

Its not that simple for some of us. I require a drivers licence medical..done by my GP every year as I drive on a HR licence ( its a 30 min appt and cost $200 !!!!) ...and I have "special conditions". So even if I have a std licence I still need a medical as I am a type 2 diabetic...not bad only just now but used to be bad. A std licence would just be a sign off by the GP but because I have the HR licence I then come under the Austroads banner for trucks. CASA cant refuse me a Basic Med licence though and I have had one but the Basic Med I need to go to a DAME where the GP is cheaper.

The Class 5 licence is still the same for me BUT I am now looking at possibly shifting my RANS S-21 from what was going to be Group G to possibly VH Experimental because its easy for me to do. I havent decided yet but if I wanted to re engine the S-21 that would make it up to 820kg MTOW which of course takes it out of Group G

If you have a crash and it’s determined you didn’t declare a (known) condition that contributed to the accident, irrespective of whether you’re flying on a Class 1, Class 2 (incl. Basic Class 2) or a Class 5 medical, you’re in strife.
