On vacation in Anchorage Alaska. Was a passenger in a Beaver, flight-seeing Denali (Mt. McKinley). Spectacular views! North America's highest peak, and we had the best possible weather, too. An experience to savour!

Attended the famous Straddie Breakfast this morning, the entire Airfield is in immaculate condition, with 27 aircraft arriving in picture perfect conditions.

 

Here some of the plane highlights, as usual a big Thank You to Pat and her team of helpers, another breakfast well done and attended.

Latrobe Valley Aeroclub members went to Orbost (Marlo) this arvo for a jaunt. 2 x RV 6's, 1 x C 172 and 3 x Jabbies.

Nice photos. One of them shows a '24' registered Jab with a Rotax sticker on the side. Can you get a factory built Jab with a Rotax now?

Got a happy surprise to see 4669 in amongst the photos. That was the aircraft I learned in. It was converted to Rotax when Paul had something like (I think) 4 engine failures in 2 years. Cost a bomb to do because he had to go the full engineering route to maintain its '24' status. Good to see it again. :)

Sat in the back seat of a warrior on the way from Canberra to Moruya. Said hello to the sky dive people and hung out in the sun. Just too nice, hard to leave. Flew "dual instruction received" back to Lake George and flitted about there for a bit. Weather over Lake Bathurst was perfidious, looking like rain close to freezing temperature. Landed at Canberra and sat watching the sun go down from inside the fence. I was supposed to fly dual to Bankstown. Fair trade?

First flight of RV12?

But FWIW, there was a nice RV7 flying out of Tooradin.

Keenaviator - no, not the first flight for the RV12 - that was done by my test pilot recently. It was actually the third time the plane has flown, but the first time I have been up in it. The test pilot is an ATPL, CFI, ATO, CP etc, and was happy to let me fly left seat. Since all my 170 or so hours to date has been in Cessna's, there were a few firsts for me - first time flying with a stick instead of a yoke, first time behind a glass panel and a Rotax, first time in an RV, and my first landing on a grass runway. The grass strip was fairly wet from recent rain, so we took off on the bitumen with a fair crosswind (my climb-out wasn't as steady as I would have liked), and landed back on the grass (rather smoothly, I might add modestly). So although it was a short flight, it was a big day for me.

Did some circuits in a super-decathlon today, unfortunately the weather wasn't good enough to go out and do aeros (lowish cloud) but I did make good start for my CSU and TW endos.

 

Got one (X-wind) landing that went a bit wobbly, and I can definitely feel how it could go pear shaped easily, but on the whole it wasn't as scary as I was thinking in advance.

 

A few more hours more before they'll let me off by myself though, and then off to the training area for some aerobatics!

My last lesson was stalls two days ago. I'm still a newbie, only 6 hours up. My instructor demoed some wing drops, that was fun. I got to take off by myself too! It was my 2nd take off, but I got it perfect this time. Next week I start circuits, can't wait!

It is available now via the Sunshine Coast Aero Club, did a few more hours today; was going quite well (off course I left my really bouncy landing for the first solo... oops).

 

Unfortunately I'm heading back to work this weekend, hope to be doing some more time in it and get some aeros and spinning done in a couple of months when I get back from the ship. Might even take it to a fly-in, I really like the center seating (makes right hands circuits easier too) and it's also a fair bit faster than my usual rides (C172 and Foxbat).

Stopped working a bit early today and decided it was time for a fly so with both kids in tow I did a preflight check, the oldest is 4 and a half and she enjoys looking for cracks and helping out (no I haven't subbed out the preflight to her and yes I do check it all myself, obviously) the young fella (2) didn't want to fly today so big sis got the right hand seat for the duration.

 

We flew all 3nm to YQDI and caught up with our local Superstol owner Brett and spray operator Les for a few minutes. Getting a few short field takeoff and landing demonstrations:thumb up: And then off for a half hour flight around the town of Quirindi and then a post sunset low level flight home. Absolutely beautiful:ecstatic: Did a go around (no special reason except a few more minutes airborn:wink:) at home and then a nice smooth landing to finish off:thumb up:.

I went out today with the intention on practicing some wingdrops and forced landings. Cloudbase was a bit low for stalls, but got the forced lands in. Got about 100 hours up now, and my forced land technique was still good, although a low pass over the chosen landing are revealed some really soggy ground!! Thankfully I was able to power out of that one!

 

Enjoy your circuits. Its very overwhelming to start with, but once you finally master it and go solo you wont wipe the smile off your face for a long time!!

I did something today I have been wanting to do for years. I did a Melbourne city orbit. Now Melbourne is nowhere near as spectacular as Sydney but it is a fantastic sight. Flying over Docklands, looking along the Yarra, past Eureka tower, Albert Park Lake, around the city to the MCG, looking down on St Pats and the Exhibition Building. Wow! What a privilege to be able to get permission to take this flight.

I am really desperate to piss off on my motorcycle around australia at the moment, but I am so close to my PPL that I wont give it up at the moment. Stories like this motivate me to finish my PPL sooner rather than later. I am getting bored with the 25nm restriction of the RPL now, and like my instructor said today, get you PPL and you can ride the hire aircraft around Aus too.
